Of course they are an example of street level visual art that is posted in
public for only a short period of time. They also help document the who,
what, when and where of a music scene over time. Each flyer is a snap shot
of what was happening in music at that moment. There are some intersting
books about Punk Flyer Art worth checking out.
Turcotte and
Miller, Fucked Up and Photocopied, Kill Your Idols: Los
Angeles, 1999.
Probably the best book on punk flyer art, very well researched, tons of
cool flyers and photos, anecdotes etc. Standing about at the point where
punk fandom/collecting and serious gallery art shows meet.
Robers, Martin,
Heavy on the Freak Sauce, self published, Claremont, 1995.
More of a zine than a book, great collection of So. Cal. hardcore flyers.
Belisto, Davis,
Kester, Street Art, the Punk Poster in San Francisco, Last
Gasp: San Francisco, 1981.
Documents the heroic era of SF punk which spawned some great posters and
flyers due to the large number of artists involved in the scene at the time.
Chantry, Art.
Instant Litter, Real Comet: Seattle, 1985.
All Seattle flyers, great punk and some new wave, similar to the SF work of
the same period.
Today we are
still underground music fans looking at these flyers and
remembering great bands, friends and shows. However, as time marches on
these flyers will be an important resource for future music fans. Also, the
psychedelic rock poster art of the 60's eventually moved from the
collector/fan realm into the art gallery. While this may or may not happen
to punk flyers, here's your chance to see them all for free before they
become high priced commodities.
