Not as far as I know.

Which is not very far because I only have a t.v. so I can watch football. It's a 13-inch that is sometimes color, sometime black and white and I can never tell exactly what's going on.

double-zom,

---
All I said is that I liked the band The Darkness. I'm sure they're honest about what they're doing. Who cares? I want entertainment.
---

I can accept that...

----
I'm sure Popular Culture via mass-media has influenced me in the past, but as for music and bands, I still rely on The Record Store or Word Of Mouth as recommendations for new music. Not TV or Video.
----

I haven't been able to make my point very clear as it applied to this discussion. You may think you're avoiding pop culture now. A lot of people think they're avoiding pop culture, but what I don't think those people realize is that pop culture has consumed the earth. If you get your recommendations from a friend or from a clerk at a record store chances are that they've been influenced by the latest trends in Spin, Rolling Stone, MTV, etc. Hence you've been influenced by the pop culture that you're trying to avoid by the transitive law.
Friend = Pop
Friend = Yours
Pop = Yours by the transitive property of mathematics.

----
The Eighties never left, neither did the Seventies, Sixties, Fifties, Forties or Thirties. I think the Twenties are done with though.
----

I enjoy how you sometimes take things too literally in order to make your point. At the same time I wonder if you're doing that on purpose or not.

----
As for their look, what would you like to see them wear? Should they be wearing Relaxed Fit Stonewashed Pleated Jeans with Extra Ass Room, Teva Sandals, a Ball Cap with the brim Rolled Up Tight, a Minnesota Wild jersey and sporting Suburban Dude Goatees?
----

Well... I'd like to see them dress up like Furries. Because I like to have sex with furries. I don't care what they wear... As long as it doesn't remind me of David Lee Roth. I'm no expert on trends and fashion, but I know a fricken rip-off when I see one. These guys are ripping off everything that has ever sucked.

Forgot to mention...

You are older than me.

You are HELLA-OLD!

Slomgom Commie,

I'd agree with the Medina show... I've seen Tesla, Dokken, and Johnny Holmes there on different occasions. I think The Dorkness falls just short of any of these classics, but... Maybe they could open for Johnny Holmes Funtime Show or something.

Gaaaaaad. I don't care for the Darkness. It's a good thing they're finally coming to America cuz the kids in the UK are tired of 'em and think they're stupid.

Not a chance, Flappers and bootleg hooch? Josephine Baker? Annette Hanshaw? Fats Waller? Why they are all the rage.

The Darkness? What kind of a name for an orchestra is that?

As long as I still can listen to Helen Kane sing "I Wanna Be Bad", the '20s will never be that far away.

A friend steered me to this Roaring 1920's Musical Extravaganza a while back - ooh la la!!

This thread is lame on soooo many levels. So let me add one more:
I see about an hour of MTV per year at my in-laws. I don't read color-glossy magazines about music, and haven't even seen their covers lately. I choose to turn a blind eye, therefore even if it's in front of me, I still may not see it. I don't even read City Pages or Pulse anymore. Sometimes the StarTribune, but not for music obviously.
And of course pop-culture bleeds it's way through everything. But as far as music goes, message boards are the only reason I know what's going on in the music world. Pathetic. Access Hollywood, which comes on the tube after really bad Saturday Night Live shows, is my primary television pop culture source. And I fall asleep during it.

I guess that's why I became aware of The Darkness so late. I guess they're passe' in the UK now? That's a big surprise. Rolling Eyes

Shit, I'm still liking The Electric 6 stuff, that must really be old hat.
They're a "rip-off" band as well.

Good thing we have bands like Kent's Candystore Band playing Totally Original and Heartfelt Midwestern Mellow Rock.

Matte's right, except it's not really that sad. I think I can honestly say that I was never influenced by radio or television, and this continues to be true. When I was a young 'un, I saw musical artists on the tube, and I somehow formed the idea in my head that those folks had nothing to do with everyday, ordinary people like my schoolmates, relatives, etc, and so they simply were of no interest to me.

Okay, now that I think about it some more, radio played a bit part in shaping my musical interests, as when I was still pretty young, I used to learn how to sing the songs I heard on my mom's radio. I had no idea what most of the words meant (and was embarrassed when I learned later just what I had been singing about), but I just wanted to emulate the sounds I heard, and got pretty good at it.

When I got a little older, and became aware of all the lines people drew with their musical tastes, lyrical content, images, coolness factor, etc, I became completely disillusioned with the whole idea of music, and turned to other healthier interests for a boy my age, like getting into fights with other boys twice my size, sticking my tongue out at girls I wanted to hold hands with, reading science fiction, and writing poetry I hoped no one would ever read.

Chances are, if my mother hadn't re-married, and my stepfather hadn't shown me how to play a guitar at the age of 12, I probably would care less about any of what goes on in the world of music today. Hell, I might even be better off for it.

At any rate, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the purpose of music is simply to entertain people, and that's about all I want to get out of it, or put into it. I guess this all has something to do with this here thread, but I'm not gonna go back and try to figure it out. I've heard thinking is considered passe in some circles.

zom-zom,

You can call our music what you like. We didn't write it with some thought in our head like "Oooh! I bet ZOM-ZOM WILL REALLY LIKE THIS ONE!"... Heheh...

Bands progress... Hopefully... People progress... Hopefully...

I don't know what bands you like (The Dorkness appearently is one), but I know you don't like the band I'm in. WOO HOO! You can tell the world. That's cool. It bothers me a lot more than I let on.

In fact... I'm sitting here crying into my tea and crumpets right now.

I heard the band you were in (Rifle Sport) was pretty good. I haven't checked it out yet, but I will. I'll be honest with you about how I feel about it... and I appreciate your honesty with me about the band I'm in.

Thanks,

Kent

I'm sure plenty of people like your band. I'm one guy that doesn't. I listened to all the MP3s. It was terrible.
That shouldn't hurt one bit.

Lots of people didn't like Rifle Sport. However, those people were idiots.

I doubt if you can find any Rifle Sport MP3s around, but if you can have at it. There are records for sale here and there.

I play in Kontrol Panel these days.
