Just found this thread. I'm also a huge fan of this show, although I'm just starting Season 4.

Quote:
HBO announced September 12th, 2006 that they have commissioned a fifth and final season, ordering 13 episodes.[22] In an interview with Slate on December 1st, 2006, David Simon said that season five will be about the media and consumers of media. The theme will be about "what stories get told and what don't and why it is that things stay the same." Journalism modeled after The Baltimore Sun will be a major focus. Profits and the decrease in the number of reporters will be an issue along with the end of aspiration for news quality.[23] In the same interview, Simon indicated that no theme seemed substantial enough to warrant a sixth season, except possibly the large influx of Hispanics and Central Americans into Baltimore. Simon said that no writer on the show spoke Spanish or had any intimate knowledge of the Baltimore Hispanic/Central American population, thus the field work would be too cumbersome.

I hadn't heard for sure before, but it certainly looks like it with that article. This will be interesting having it focus on the media. Previously, it always seemed like they worked next seasons characters into the current season, but I don't remember much with the media at all before.

I hope this show has some sort of impact, both as just seriously good television and as social commentary, but I don't have my hopes terribly high.

Wow, fuck, wow.

Excellent series finale.

Kind of shell shocked now that it's over.

Loved seasons 1 and 2.

Just finsihed #3 and was disapointed. The issues were all there, the finale was great in a shakespearean way. But it just didn't do it for me. I didn't really connect with any of the characters like I did on the previous seasons. And some of the scenes had a trite meaningless that bored me and left me waiting for the other shoe to drop. did anyone else feel #3 was not up to par? Or am I just getting tired of this show?

I haven't given up on the series though, and have disc 1 of season 4 just waiting for me to consume.

Yeah, I thought season 3, was actually one of the better seasons. If you didn't like it, you may not like 4 and 5.

I'm loving season 4 so far, so perhaps 3 was an anomoly for me. Like I said, I just didn't connect with the characters on that season.

From Netflix reviews, it appears that seasons 4 and 5 are the best. Of course, if you made it to seasons 4 and 5, there is a pretty good chance that you will like the show:

Season / Netflix rating (out of 5 stars)
1 / 4.2
2 / 4.5
3 / 4.5
4 / 4.8
5 / 4.7

I'd say that's fairly spot on except for Season 5. While it was still really good, it didn't quite do as much as every previous season. Season 4 in my mind is possibly the greatest masterpiece of television ever. The elements that made 4 great are all in 5, but sometimes the information is buried further into the subtext than is normal for the show. The problem they are trying to point out is there, but they never actually say it, which is too bad.

Season 3 can be a hard one to wrap your head around, partially because they take away one of the main characters, McNulty. He's a mouthpiece of sorts for so many things for two seasons and then they take him away, but not in a dramatic fashion, they just make him irrelevant, which is the boldest and most well-done moves ever done with any TV character ever. They also add a ton of peripheral characters to set the stage for the story line.

I absolutely loved the last episode. They did so many subtle things perfectly throughout. It's neither a happy ending, nor a tragic ending. Nothing felt forced, nothing was neat. Can only hope another fantastic work like this comes along.
