A thorough search of the archives proves no thread for The Stranglers. WTF? I KNOW there are more than a few fans that populate this board, why no appreciation thread?

I will admit that it took me ages to see the appeal of this band, but starting about 1993 my appreciation has continued to grow. At first it was the keyboards and the divergence from the 3-chords-and-a-sneer "punk" that turned me off. I mean, in 1985 when I was heavily into Eater, Sex Pistols, Damned, Gen X et al The Stranglers just didn't fit the mold my mind had created. As I got older and, thankfully wiser, I was able to come around and see the unique take the band had on rock and their fearless attempt to not get themselves pigeon-holed into any certain genre.

These days I really dig the mellower side of the band, European Female, Strange Little Girl, Always The Sun, Golden Brown... for a bunch of hard-asses they sure made some pretty (disturbing) musics.

I vaguely remember going to see the Stranglers live at some bumbfuck bar in Chanhaskafridley County, winter of 1980. BillyRedCloud will remember the details, he's a huge Stranglers fan from way back and has a better memory too.

Thumpers! That would be the one Stranglers show I wasn't able to bootleg. With everyone forced to check any scrap of metal on their body at the door, from dog collars to spiked wrist bands to hair pins, there was no way I was going to get a tape deck in the door. The band weren't too pleased to find themselves at Thumpers, and vowed never to return.

Unsurprisingly, this is the song that turned me onto them.

I have all of their albums plus some weird stuff like the Aural Sculpture Manifesto EP. One of my top 5 favourites ever, this band.

I even like all the slick, later albums. They have a sinister edge to them buried in the smooth pop sound. Brilliant. Hugh Cornwell writes great lyrics. Unfortunately, he left and the others continued with some other guys under The Stranglers name. Hugh still does solo, and recently toured with The Jam's rhythm section, I believe.

Agreed - The Stranglers have always been on my short list, no matter what else I was into at the time. One of my fave shows of all time was when they played at Duffy's. Hugh has kept the torch burning even without the other Stranglers, sometimes even moreso. He just played a few shows out here on the coast, on a bill with those fellows from The Jam, and he's definitely still holding his own. I've also still got a soft spot for the solo LPs from Burnel, and Greenfield - both of those still sound as mysterious as they did when I first bought them years ago.

I finally spun the Nosferatu LP the other night. Not one of my faves but one I am glad is in the collection.

Euroman Commeth is a stone killer.

Don't give up on Nosferatu quite yet. It was a grower for me.

I'd have to say that Aural Scupture is the most brilliant pop album of all time. I will dance with anyone, anywhere, at anytime to No Mercy.
