This G4 is dying. About a week ago I downloaded the latest "updates" and now the desktop icons suddenly disappear and the current app will come and go.

The problems started a few months back when I "updated" Safari, it would crash when I went to quite a few sites. I tried all the fixes I read about, none worked. So I downloaded Firefox, which really sucked, very slow.

Now this morning Firefox won't start either. I'm looking for a G5 or G4, iMac is fine.

If anyone knows of a good deal please email me.

False alarm.. I was able to fix it.

It turns out the update affected Stuffit somehow, and all I had to do was change a preference and now it's back to normal.

As for Safari, fuck it. I downloaded Camino which works great, very fast.

Saved me some $$.

I still have a mac g3 ibook laptop. It is and always has been the most useless piece of equipment I have ever owned.
I only keep it around to see how web stuff appears on outdated technology.

I have never had an exciting or rewarding experience using apple products but they look nice.

I after years of going back and fourth between linux/windows/mac bought a intel mac. 10.5 to me brought OS X to a new level, granted most of the stuff I do is Linux/Unix based so think of it as UNix with a pretty face for me.

I would run Ubuntu or OS X over any windows machine.

I've used mostly Mac stuff since the mid '80s.

My old first-generation iMac still works fine. I was able to fix the problems in an acceptable manner within an hour last night, and now the old G4 is working like it always has. I bought it used like 5 years ago.

We record on Intel macs. Never had a problem that couldn't be easily remedied with software, and have never had a hardware problem. The G5s are running at least 12 hours a day, every day. And it's pretty intensive stuff, this digital recording.

I'm sticking with the mac shit, it's the devil I know.

I made the switch to a Mac about a year and an half ago. Best computer decision I have ever made. Once you go Mac....you never go back.

I have a power mac 7600 that just keeps on chugging along. It's on monitor # 4 now & takes care of 95% of my gfx needs. Best investment next to my leather jacket!

I am about to get my hands on a Mac G4 Mirror Door Drive (I guess its the last G4 they made) to run Final Cut. Right now its got 500mb or RAM. I wanna bump it up to at least a gig if not 2 or 4. Since I am new to the world of Mac who should I turn to to upgrade the ram on the beast? And are there any other improvements I could make to allow it to maximize Final Cut and Pro Tools? I don't need the biggest and newest and fastest, I just need it to work.

I used to have one of those good machines, I believe they had 4 slots but 2 gigs max. They use either PC2700 or PC2100 depending on the model. If you can figure out CPU etc.. I can look it up.

I believe those are dual G4 which should run FCP fairly decently. You may be able to get 10.5 to run on there. I'd guess it would be about $80 to get the 4 512 MB sticks you'd need to max it out at 2 gigs but could dig up some old ones maybe?

So that G4 has been kinda wonky. I got a torrent of Photoshop that worked fine for 3 weeks. Then when I went to fire it up it launched about half way then stopped.

Toast won't let me burn a data disk. When I click on the data disk option the app shuts down.

3 days ago I started getting the same Photoshop problem with Final Cut. I click to launch the app, it gets about half-way loaded up and then stops loading, shutting down the launch window.

Anyone know what is going on?
