|
|
I was given a DVD of all local music videos from a guy at Copy Cats when I took a tour of their shop last week.
This DVD is called "Spectrum - Minnesota Soundtracks". Appearently this DVD was sold or given away as a promotional tool at Sound Unseen this year.
I've watched about 1/2 of the videos on the DVD so far. Given the fact that I make music video's for local bands as a side project/business I was pretty interested to see what people were doing locally for music videos.
I don't know if anyone's seen this, but I've yet to really impress myself with any of the work I've done yet... but I'm even less impressed by a lot of the videos that people are actually putting into circulation.
Either way the DVD is interesting to watch and has it moments when it's actually fun.
The track listing (in case you're interested):
1. Low - Canada
2. Sideways - Oblivion And Points Beyond
3. The Wipeouters - Twist n` Launch
4. Sweet Jap - Hong Kong Express
5. Basement Apartment - Learning To Fall
6. Lateduster+Catalyst - Plain Old Andrea, With A Gun
7. Booka`b - Manifest Pursuit
8. Har Mar Superstar - Power Lunch
9. Atmosphere - Summersong
10. Kid Dakota - Negative Kid (Live from radio K)
11. Askeleton - Ghosts
12. Melismatics - New Infection
13. Likehell - Let Me Trip
14. Mason Jennings - Sorry Signs On Cash Machines
15. Heiruspecs - 5ves
16. Motion City Soundtrack - My Favorite Accident
17. Grant Hart - In A Cold House/"Wrath Of Achilles"
18. Genius Junior - Effingham
19. Revolver Modele - Silhouettes
20. Jake Mandell - Bati Dominance
21. DJ Hermit - Freek Yobati
22. Fighting Tongs - Tallights
23. Polara - Is This It? (Not this time, buddy)
24. Mark Mallman - Love Look At You
25. Flipp - I Still Love Rock-N-Roll
26. Golden Apple Manufacturing - Fissures In The Concrete
27. The Soviettes - Blue Stars
28. Atmosphere - Godlovesugly
I've gotten through about 14 tracks so far. There are a couple of videos that stand out above the rest that I've seen... and I think I'll go watch the rest now that I've reminded myself that I own this thing... Maybe I'll put up a review or something.
I don't know any way to get ahold of this DVD other than to go to Copy Cats and ask for one. I think they're "out of print" at this point.

Videos suck. Shut off the fucking TV and go see the bands. Most of the ones listed suck as well.
Several of them are not even bands that play shows. |

| There is some Harder Fuller on there, and they've done some decent work. Other locals to check out would be our very own Yuck Foo and Chuck Statler. There are some people doing excellent videos in Minneapolis. Also, I believe madcat has done some video work. Zom probably has, as well. Shit, there are a lot of people around here that have done videos. You might be looking at the wrong stuff, if you're not impressed. |

All I've looked at in the past couple of days is this DVD that I just got last week from the people at Copy Cats.
The last 1/2 of the DVD wasn't that bad. There were a few highlights in there.
I did see the name "Harder Fuller" flash by somewhere in there... Whether it was on the DVD box or in the credits.
I'll try to check out these other people that you've referred me to as well. I just want to get a feel for what people are doing out there.
I did see a pretty cool video that was done by Yuppie Dirtball Productions for Halo Effect that might interest some people.

Dom-Dom,
I'm sure I'll see you at shows ya putz. I've done my work for the day. It was time to sit in front of the TV and veg.
The main reason I was interested in this subject is because I've been doing a few for people in the last few months and I wanted to see what other people were doing. Some are doing really cool stuff... Some aren't.
Time to go to bed and rest my weary head.

| Music videos have always been a dodgy proposition, in my opinion. I guess it depends what you're into. If all the footage is just a montage, used as a backdrop for the song itself, it tends to be rather boring. I recall an old Timbuktu video that I loved, which was just shot in their practice space. Something simple is often the best approach. The medium itself, as always, is a big part of the impression left on the viewer. If the artist is visual in nature, hopefully this will carry over in a video. If not, then really, what's the point? |

I understand that, as an activity, making music related video stuff can be fun. But for me, where they can become distasteful is how they're used. Are they just a backdrop for some kind of setting? Or are they merely advertisements for the band? Are they used mainly for a promotion? This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (maybe I should quit sucking on them?)
I guess the content makes a difference too. Do they try to pump up the musicians image? Or is it an honest piece of video artwork? It's all so subjective.
I've created montages (sp?) of video thingies to project on the band while they play. Sursumcorda had a great set-up for that. ( http://www.supersphere.com/Club/Archive/?ID=5 [click on flybussen] ) I've also had fun shooting a video of myself for a song I had on a demo tape but I am picky about who I subject to it.
Generally, I've had fun making some music-related videos, but I don't like watching them all that much I guess.
In summary, good morning to you. |

| So, I was looking through the above list and something came to mind. The voice in my head sounded something like this (imagne James Earl Jones here) "Daego, are you sure this is TCPunk or did you end up on www.kissasshipstercrap.com?" |

How is it any worse than listening to a record?

This statement is a good reply to your first statement.

| I always liked that late 80s (?) Twin/Tone video comp...it's sort of a period piece now which makes it even better. |

Is there any local cable access show that shows local videos besides that Video K show? Which I do like a lot. I think it's on Tuesday nights.
Now that DVDs are here maybe there will be more bands making videos again. I like them.
Me and a friend made one for my old band (Dazzling Killmen) back in the early 90's. In fact, here it is if you are curious:
http://www.skingraftrecords.com/sg%20quicktime%20movies/Medicine_me.mov
It's 13 MB, so be prepared for a wait.
We did it all in super 8 and transferred it to 3/4" tape and edited it at a local St. Louis cable access TV station. Total cost: around $75. |

That was really cool. It's amazing what you can do with a video camera and a song.
That music made me want to smash stuff.
