THIS POST SHOULD READ
THE TEN BEST HIPPIE SONGS OF ALL TIME.

Now that I've purged myself by barfing all over my front porch, I feel strong enough to venture into dangerous territory:

1) In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (the long version) by Iron Butterfly
2) Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group
3) Highway Star by Deep Purple
4) I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years After
5) Summertime Blues by the Blue Cheer
6) Hey Bulldog by the Beatles
7) Baba O'Reilly by the Who
8) Iron Man by Black Sabbath
9) Little Wing by the Jimi Hendrix Experience
10) Rainy Night House by Joni Mitchell

well hey, you got the Joni Mitchell down
(you can not be a hippie male if you do not want to go down on Joni Mitchell)
but you didn't include the Dead.
isn't that a prerequisite?
I hate the Dead.

Aren't those tunes way too hard rocking for hippies. I'd say those'd be liked by greasy long haired '70s rocker dudes (except Joni). Yeah, the Dead would have to be all over your list...and the Eagles & CSN&Y, anything with Crosby in it...

How about "Horse with no Name" by whoever?
"Bye Bye Miss American pie" by that other guy?

Hmmm...
The Who- well, I'll admit that they have ventured into hippie territory, sadly enough. But I'd say "Magic Bus" has more flying of the "freak flag".
I'm happy to see that you have represented both sides of the Atlantic, but I think the USA has committed more heinous acts of hippiedom than the UK. Speaking of which, one of the worst offenders ever -Jethro Tull- should be represented here.

I think I'm not on the same page as you guys are re: what is hippy music. Everyone keeps saying stuff that in my book is proto-metal, early grease ball head banging music. I think of hippy music as foo foo-ey prancing music...therefore in my opinion Black Sabbath is way to "hard-rocking" for a hippy to prance to.

Hey Zoom Zoom and Molly Cuddle,

After I barfed on my front porch after complying my WORST LIST OF SONGS, I returned with a saintly glow on my face ready to forgive hippies for their ghastly sins, no matter how ghastly (yeh right)

If you can uncross yer eyeballs, both you fucking smug shitheads, I was going for the BEST HIPPIE songs. No, the Grateful Dead and Jethro Tull did not make the list if YOU CAN FUCKING READ. Lambast me all you want, you fucking bastards. I suspect yer both closeted hippies anyway. I can smell skunk or petuille oil a mile away. Please twirl around in circles until you fall down.

I believe you mean "patchouli" oil.
Now why don't you "twist a fatty" of some "righteous ganja", put on your dashiki,
take your shoes off, listen to some Shawn Phillips and "mellow out"?

oh forgive me. I didn't realize there was a good hippie song.
I thought best hippie song = worst hippie song.
Your funny though, you almost had me thinking that you were angry for real.

BEST hippie songs:

If 6 was 9 - hendrix
Across the Universe - Beatles/Lennon?
Under My Thumb - Stones
Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
Hair - title tune of the musical

Many more to follow.

I think it's hilarious when punks call each other hippies. THEY'RE THE SAME THING. I also think it's funny when you call each other 'smug shithead'.

When you're talkin' hippie, you're talkin' Neil Merryweather & The Space Rangers...I seem to remember zomzom raving about his albums!

Otherwise, you can't forget:

The Association - "along comes mary"

5th Dimension - "grazin in the grass it's a gas baby can you dig it?"

Scott McKenzie - "If you're goin to San Fran..."

The Animals - "Down at Monterey"

Stephen Stills - "Love the One You're With"

& for the late 70s hippie, the Fleetwood Mac song about "layin you down in the tall grass to let me do my stuff..." Ewwww!!!

Whoa, DUDE! Neal Merryweather! -and it's not with the Space Rangers, that's just an album title, maaaan.
I did a search about the guy, and apparently he's Canadian and used to be in a band with Bruce Cockburn!
That song Hollywood Boulevard though, it rocks!
But, back to the hippies....

Oh, that's right...the classic Space Rangers ALBUM - Neal looks like Doug Henning on angel dust! Also a funky version of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" on that platter. Bitchin.

Wait now I'm a hippie!!!!!

Don't forget painfully obvious cash-in attempts:
*Sprit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum
*That "Reach Out in the Darkness" song (you know, 'I think it's so groovy now, that people are finally gettin' together') - Friend & Lover
(and some more obscure ones spring to mind)
*Itchycoo Park - Small Faces
*Memory of a Free Festival - David Bowie

I'm missing more really obvious ones, but the titles/artists just won't come to me. Damn brown acid!

Really though, what is so bad about hippies?
i think there message is cool and most of them are burnt-out-refuse-to-shave-my-legs-and-will-not-wash-cause-i'm-a-acid-freak-and-think-the-water-will-eat-me....but hey, all i know is that they have bad music, good message and they think butter flies, flowers and grass is the best thing since sliced bread.
