Ahh, well as discussed in another thread, I am young and that is an apparent problem. I am junior in college, but only just recently turned seventeen. I am double majoring in Genetics, Cell Bio and Development and Philosophy to give you some idea of what I am doing. Albeit, I was/am strong in all subjects. As for labor work, I have 'undocumented' experience in a lot of things. Oh, and I do not have a driver's lisence. SO, overall my predicament should now be fairly obvious...

You got problems if you can't find a job in this city. Good jobs are another story. Money's money though.

Well, I am also a vegan, which tends to cut down the market of plausible jobs...

LOL! Dude, I'm not sure what being vegan has to do with anything. For ethical reasons it might prevent you from working at Burger King, but you don't want those jobs anyway.

Well, beign vegan cuts out all food service related jobs pretty much. It seems everywhere I look, they either want me to be able to drive, or to have a highschool diploma (which I dont really have....I forwent that)...or they just want me to be 18. So with all of the above, I dont know how much I am really left with. Surely something, but I was hoping to find something remotely interesting so that I would be interested in holding that job for some time.

Toff, Lie about the High School diploma...they wont check. Have you tried UPS or FedEX? They have odd shifts and pay well for people slinging boxes. You have a small jump on the school people looking for summer jobs...act fast or it will get nasty out there. Good luck!

UPS is a good idea. You work from 3:00 PM to 9:00 or so, M-F. You'll work your ass off but it pays fairly well and there are benefits. As a bonus, you won't be slinging a lot of carcasses around.

Thanks Scotty, thanks...

Hmm, I may have to try out UPS, I had seen ads for emplyment but mostly for drivers. I had somewhat counted it out for on the account that I was thinking only of the drivin aspect, but package slinging wouldnt be bad.

Ok, this time I'll actually try to help.

A lot of folks scoff at this, but with a modicum of typing or 10-key skills you should sign up with a temp agency, I recommend Dolphin. A lot of people think they can't type or 10-key fast enough for data entry work, but they are usually wrong.

The way things are in town these days, temp agencies need people BADLY, enough so that you can pretty much dictate where you will go, declining assignments with no real pressure from the Dolphin staffers. These days, they're just glad to have ya! They'll keep you adequately employed, and many places you'll go will like you (won't they?) and ask you to sign on permanently.

So if times are tight, get going down there. They'll have you working within a couple of days.

Word of advice with those temp agencies though, as cool as they are, they don't appreciate employees showing up at assignments high on crystal meth and talking to people that aren't there, like I did 11 years ago.

oh now i get it, you really aren't getting college credit, it was a joke. because if you were, you would have to have finished high school. i can be so slow.
now you realize that you should get your ged asap, right? for future use.
how much money do you need. do you still live at home? or are you on your own?
what do you use for transportation? bus? bike? walk?
the temp thing would probably work. i know someone who used to fill the jobs for them. she quit because it sucked too much with deadbeats showing up late if they showed up at all, and then the companies would take it out on her, and the deadbeats would not understand why they weren't getting called.
you could make yourself shine in that environment.
and again, i'm pretty sure that even vegetarians can still touch meat. just so they don't lick their fingers.

Vashrok, what makes you think he's not getting college credit? My brother did the same thing, and he skipped the high school diploma as well.
And, no, a person doesn't need a high school diploma. It's just as easy to lie about it. Why would they ever bother to check, especially if one seems intelligent?
And personally, I find handling/smelling meat revolting, and would never want to do it on a daily basis.

Toff, you can come and work here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. We ALWAYS need people. There are tons of different jobs, and once you're in, you're "in" and can start getting more and more jobs here! Mostly we are DESPERATE for people to come in and help us set up and take down for Events. The pay isn't great, 7.50 per hour, but you often end up getting paid double. We have all sorts of sporadic shifts and hours. Most shifts are two hours long, which either sucks or works out perfectly! We also do coatchecks, and those are far more lucrative. You can decide when you want to work, too, so even if you already have another gig, you could do this part time. All we do is haul tables and chairs and sometimes a piano or two around, and it's actually very cool. You are not too young, and we already employ half of MCAD. Email me if you're interested.

I am getting college credit, I am a normal college student...with, of course, a few exceptions. I dropped out of high school when I was just 15, moved out of the house, moved to Minneapolis, applied to the U and got accepted...and here I am.AS for transportation I bike, walk, take the bus, and run.

Hmm, I was actually thinking about looking into MIA...that might be good to have as a side job. I looked into UPS and its $8.50-9.50hr, with nice shitfts (all evening and early morn). I dont know if I could do the temp sort of thing, I am sure I would do well with it...though, I would proabably rather do something else. It is something to keep in mind however. So, scotty what did they do with you in the meth situation? I have had friends do things of the sort, but they were always working at places that didnt care enough to pay too much attention...

vashrok handles some serious meat! Like me, I am sure she has completely lost any grasp on what is disgusting to other people. Having done or assisted on dozens of autopsies, the only meat I won't eat is liver.

BTW, oddly, you don't need a HS diploma to go to college...a really smart kid in my HS started post-secondary in 10th grade and never came back. He's probably at NASA by now.

Ahh, employment has found me, and oddly enough, all at once. I am probably going to take a shift at UPS and I have been offered a job at Asasse Yah (african juice bar and gift shop), as well as taking care of yard/gardens of the owner. All is good, thank you for the ideas....it was very helpful.

Hi all -

I haven't been on the board much, due to actually becoming employed,
as a Sales Rep/Recruiter for one of the temp agencies I've previously
worked with. I've had some small amount of success getting some folks
jobs, including our beloved Emma, and something just came my way, I
thought I'd share, for what it's worth. It's a suit job, so I know
that might rule some of you out, but I know some of you look pretty
sharp, and if you want a check bad enough, it might be up your alley.
I know after not working for over a year, and selling my guitar, etc,
putting on a tie was a small concession indeed. Some of us gotta eat,
y'know?

I don't get to check the board much during the day, so phone me if
you're seriously interested, and I'll see what I can do. Disregard
the date in the description - I thought these positions had all been
filled, but one of the other reps here just asked me if I knew anyone,
and I'm just trying to share the love. I'm at Abby Blu Staffing, and
you can reach me by calling 612-338-3200, and ask for J. Free. Be cool,
y'all - serious replies only, please!

CUSTOMER SERVICE===
Must be open to travel.
3 days to up to a week at a time working in a variety of states at trade shows
representing client.
Need to convey a professional image (shirt and tie etc.)
Days when not doing trade shows will be doing customer service work in offfice.
customer service background.
Be willing to travel frequently, be available for 3-5 months,
must be at least 21 years old.
Most likely will be leaving sunday.
Don't need a credit card-cash advances are given if needed.
Will start WED 6/26/02 8:30 am for training and Sun will fly out.
Will be paid for travel time so will get some overtime.

Hey, I didn't own a suit either - until it looked like I was gonna lose everythingthat was near and dear to me. That was worth a lot more than pulling my earrings out and remembering how to tie a necktie. Besides, we're punks - we have accesorizing down! Me in a vintage '50's suit and collar bar, next to some yuppie fuck in a power tie - no comparison! This is survival we're talking about!!

Thought I'd drop another line here - there are some positions available which involve scanning documents, in preparation for uploading them to a corporate website. There are still a few day shifts left, but also some second shifts that run til 10 pm, I believe. Call me if you want to work, have some skills, and own some business casual clothes. Registration involves some testing and a background check is required, so if you really need a job, I wouldn't waste too much time. Cheers!

Hi again - the update is that there are still some of the second shift positions available with this client. There is also a client looking for a long-term analyst with a mortgage company, to start next week - training is provided, and this is a 1st shift position. Anyone who is interested in either of these positions should call me ASAP, and come register with our downtown office, so you can be eligible for these positions.

Hey..!
I am in need of a job also...maybe someone can help me out? I am almost 16. Past work experiences include working the cafe/espresso bar at The New Union,(some nights I made over 60 smoothies!) And also doing the lights. (They are a concert venue place) Reason for leaving: I'm not Christian... it was a Christian club, it got too awkward.

Yeah, I can get around... I don't get my license until January, but the bus is good enough for me. (I ride it nearly every day) Umm... I have my ears pierced a lot, my lip is also pierced... not to mention my hair is always multiple unnatural colors... so I would need a place that wouldn't care about physical appearance. Some interests of mine include punk rock, anything involving music, art, punk rock, umm... yeah. I am a good worker.... I just need a job in which I will earn a few extra bucks. Money isn’t so important. I am up for anything... not really looking for a major corporate job.. i.e. burger king, target, taco belle, ect.

Any input whatsoever would be appreciated tremendously.

Thank you…!

Yes, I have also begun looking for BONA FIDE, RELIABLE, INDUSTRY-SCALE WORK in earnest. Some stuff I was kind of waiting around for, large sums of money I expected and/ or opportunities, does not seem to be panning out. I am pretty motivated. Keeping my house is a big carrot on a stick! If anyone knows about design or production openings, please pass it on.

Manda, if you live around/near uptown or dinkytown there's many coffeeshops in the area, I'm not sure what the competition is like but there's about 10 within a few blocks of my place in uptown (Bob's, Cafetto, Muddy Waters, Urban Bean, Pandora, etc...) and dyed hair and/or piercings are no biggie. Not sure what sort of competition there is for those kinda jobs though, but worth a look.

Chelsea, keep plugging away! The market is super tough right now from what I hear (I've finally been employed for almost a whole year now after being laid off and finding nothing for almost 5 months!), but here are a few openings here and there, miss vlad works @ a design firm though and I'll let you know if her or I hear of any openings.
