XP has fucked up my computer for several months now, but it may have to do more with me than with the program. One of these days I will get around to fixing it.

I've had WindowsXP since the final version 2600 came out and I'd have to say that it's the most stable version of Windows that you can get.

The problems with the OS are that it doesn't do what it's told all the time. You shut certain options off, you edit your start menu, etc. and Windows just takes control again and changes your settings to what you like.

There are a lot of options with XP that make it even more attractive, such as file system based encryption(which I have yet to play with) and logging of any sort of errors.

With regard to specific problems:
Some programs will not run under WindowsXP(this is of course normal for new OS's)
and there seem to be driver issues. I would do a search on google for bug reports on XP.

I heard that the XP encryption, as well as the software registration code, was cracked in less than 24 hours. Any truth to this? RC?

RAH's brother gave him XP but failed to mention that he had not installed it on his own computer, so RAH got to be the test pilot.

I've had XP for a while. But rather than rushing to install the latest greatest on my box, I like to wait and hear the stories from other people. Most of the posts go something like this: I just installed XP and now my A:CD Burner B:Scanner C:Sound Card won't work!

I've heard of people having no problems too, some of them love it. I personally can't think of any reason to use XP yet, I don't like the security features and the hand-holding crap. Reno is correct, they cracked the media security for XP in 24 hours.

XP = Xtra Poop

XP is just plain annoying Naturally I haven't installed it on my machine but I've worked with enough upgrades and new machines with it on. SO m,uch of it seems to be counter-intuitive, or maybe my intuition has been ruined by previous versions of Windohs.

I just put XP professional on my new PC and haven't had any problems at all. XP is really just a cute version of Win 2000. Turn all the crap off and you've got a pretty good OS. As far as security is concerned, you still need to be behind some kind of firewall anyway.

I'm not sure if it's what you were talking about above, but XP has what has been described as the worst security hole in any OS released to date. Unless the patch is installed, an XP machine connected to the internet can be taken over almost completely if the hacker knows how to exploit the breach. And this is the "most secure OS ever released." I don't see the point of upgrading to anything over Win98SE. Fuck Microsoft.

Well...Download the patch. BTW - No OS will ever be 100% secure.

98SE - Now there's a secure OS !!!

But you gotta love an OS that is so unsecure that it draws the attention of the FBI. Christ, will Microsoftserve ever learn from their mistakes?

Why should they? We're the ones that really take up the virtual ass in the long run.
I'm suprised that they aren't charging for their patches yet!

Then again you could go out and buy one of those cute little Mac's that look like a lunchbox.

XP is like the AOL of OSs. I stole it and installed it and loved it as far as a User Interface goes. As a server? Nyuck Nyuck! Don't bother! XP to me was just a bad attempt to steal people away from the new "Jello-y" Mac OS X with all it's cute goodies.

If you wanna serve, go with FreeBSD or Linux.
I use Win2K Advanced Server, but that's cos' I'm not a network geek.

I'm not saying 98SE is the ultimate OS or anything, just that Microsoft packs and packs and packs its products with stupid "features" which needlessly open users up to security holes. I just don't see the point of upgrading to XP because everything I use runs just fine on 98SE. I just networked my first Win2000 machine yesterday and it took me a fucking hour just to find the TCP/IP settings. Plus, every new OS they release means all the MCSA's and MCSE's out there have to take more classes to remain certified, which is a fucking scam as far as I'm concerned. God I hate Microsoft. But I'll never buy a Mac.

We're getting a new computer for work soon. Going with a speedy Gen. Nanosystems box. I'm a Mac guy, but I admit we can get more bang/buck going this route. I am comforted though, because the guy who does our computer stuff says we can go Linux if I want. We only use it for web sales and email, so that should work fine. He's a UNIX/Linux guy anyways so it suits him as well.

Fuck you Gates. Nyaaaa.

I just installed another copy of XP Pro without any problems at all. General Nanosystems sells OEM copies of Win 2k Pro for 139.00 and XP Pro for 159.00. Not bad compared to Comp USA, Worst Buy, or Micro Center.

It happens with Win2k also, the USB drivers are largly undevoloped, plus if you dont start with a clean install you have to go and root around looking for any old CD drivers and CD software and kill it, uninstall Windows media player 7's CD plug-in, and get (if you can get them) Win2k/XP compatible drivers, Mac's had this problem also but saw fit to remedey it themselves instead of waiting for the hardware companys to catch up. there is shit all over the BBS's about this common problem.

Barabbas-for cripes sake, if you can hang on to 98SE...do so. God I miss that OS.
Ever since Win ME the whole worlds gone and flown over the nest.

Using 98 is like living at your moms house when your over 21...people will make you feel like a looser, tell you you should get your own place, look at you funny, etc. But its only out of jealousy cause...we'd all live at moms house if we could.
Paying rent sucks, and so does dealing with Win ME, 2000, and XP.

So there...

I finally put XP pro on my machine and it did not like my SCSI card at all. I had to throw in an ancient adaptec 2940 for it to recognize any scsi devices. I'm just glad it's just an evaluation copy and will expire after 6 months.
