Crap, I was supposed to post this when I got to work this morning... Hopefully someone's still looking. How much do I have to know about my computer to install an ethernet card? Our cable modem was hooked up over the weekend, but it don't do no good unless you can hook the computer up to the modem. (yeah, I'm definately a software geek, not a hardware geek) IP: Logged |

It's not a difficult procedure. You need the card, the driver disk that came with the card, and a screwdriver. I'm presuming that you're on Windows (if you're using a Mac old enough to not have ethernet built in post here again). The general procedure is to turn the machine off and unplug everything from the case, open the case, find an empty PCI slot, screw the card in, reconnect everything, restart the computer, and go through the "add new hardware" rigamarole, choosing the furnished driver disk when asked where to look for the driver. -p IP: Logged |

Yeah, Ethernet cards are usually easy money installs. with any luck your card will automatically set itself up for DHCP nertworking which the cable network will require.IP: Logged |

You can probably guess how this went, as this is my first post since I posted this topic...Hardware install went fine (I didn't even need the screwdriver) but plug-and-play was not going to happen. When windows(98) detected the new hardware, It wanted a system disk that I don't have. Now, when I start up I get errors for missing dll's. Crap. All sorts of things are acting screwy. Does windows delete it's own files at these times just so that you have to reload them, to make sure you have a copy of their OS on hand? IP: Logged |

That might not be what is going on technically, but it might as well be true. Any computer is going to need a copy of the OS installer disk sooner or later and in my limited experience this is definitely true for Win98. -p IP: Logged |

If you're requested to insert the OS installer disc that you don't have, try pointing the dialog box to "c:\windows", "c:\windows\system", or "c:\windows\system32"If the requested file has never been installed on the machine this won't help much, but worth a try. The dialog box should show you the name(s) of the requested file(s)...write them down and search your machine. If you don't find them, you'll need to get the OS or maybe search google for the requested file(s). Good luck [This message has been edited by RipVanWinkle (edited 11-22-2002).] IP: Logged |

roomie brought home a win98 dist last night, when I left, he was re-installing windows. When I got home (farking quarter after three) nothing seemed very different. Same errors on startup, a couple more icons on the desktop. Won't get to really look into it 'till this weekend, but hey, that's not very far away... IP: Logged |

Basically, you're TCP/IP networking is farked up. All you really needed to do was remove all the Windows Networking components and then reinstall it. I don't have any free time this weekend and I'm temporarily carless (come through for me soon BKM!), but it would probably take me <15 minutes to get it configured.IP: Logged |
