Try to find an IBM thinkpad, they're the most bombproof ones I've seen.Sound blaster also makes an external USB sound device for laptops called Extigy. Most laptops sound cards/chips are weak, so you'd probably want to add the Extigy to your package. /me pictures Ollie sitting on the beach editing things. good times. IP: Logged |

Yea i have a IBM Thinkpad 600e PII and i'm very happy with it. As steef said they are pretty bomb proof. It is also fairly light. I would recommend looking into getting a IBM or a Toshiba.IP: Logged |

Now, let me clear 1 thing up... I have NEVER used my computer without wearing pants. Well, I haven't TODAY. I mean TODAY, Thursday Nov 28. But it's only 2:49am so there's still time!Steef, are there any other external sound input devices that you know of? I wanna use the thing for actual recording as well as editing. While wearing pants. IP: Logged |

Ollie, I second the IBM Thinkpad. My kids at school thrash on them and they're nearly indestructible. Just be careful with that credit card!IP: Logged |

I wanna be able to bring the thing to a band practice and use it to demo out new songs, so I guess 1/2 live and 1/2 studio.

Get a new laptop that has IEEE1394 ("Firewire" in the Apple world) ports. There are a lot of audio interfaces coming onto the market that connect via firewire and are designed with luggable recording in mind. Check out the MOTU 828, Metric Halo Mobile I/O, and the Presonus Firestation. -p IP: Logged |

ya know, they call it firewire in the PC world, too, and most laptops come with it now, except for maybe the very low end ones.IP: Logged |
