Where are the best (and/or most cost efficient) places to get a 7" mastered and pressed (not necessisarily at the same place tho)?????

I've asked some people and gotten good info but i want more info. especially about mastering, i think i've got the pressing down. there is some place in chicago called Metropolis or something?

My favorite mastering guy is John Golden. I think he's a genius. But expensive. http://www.johngoldenmastering.com/

Tim Mac does a fine job, is much cheaper, and is right in town. http://www.tt.net/~timmac/

john golden or tim mac... ummmm, errr....

john golden generally only deals with certain people/labels, and depending on when you catch him, is at least 3 to 4 weeks for turnaround.

davey g is also in mpls and has, by far, the best facility in the midwest. his reputation speaks for itself (pretty sure he just finished remastering the majority of the rocket from the crytpt/drive like jehu catalog). dave is also really fun to work with.

(not to sound all bitchy, but i always get shit for dissing mpls. so i like to give credit where credit is due)

This is a really good question. Red Vendetta has a cd recorded....the only problem is that we need to find a place where we can get cds and 7"'s made....
at a really reasonable cost. What about inserts? Is there somewhere that does professional printing in town for cheap?

Here's where I just got the new Sicbay 7" pressed. They're good. It cost $627 for 500 7" records.

Yep, I got the 2 Coffin Cheaters and the Hostages 7"s pressed there. I think it was about $500 for the first run of 300. That inclued all the set up fees. That did not include the jackets or the plastic bags. For the jackets I went to Kinko's it's about $500 for 300 jackets 1 side color and 1 side b&w. Call them up before you go in and they'll connect you with one of their sales reps who will cut you a deal for big projects.

Mastering for vinyl requires a lathe to cut on... if there's anybody who cuts vinyl locally I haven't heard of them.

If you want to "pre-master" for vinyl - in other words, play your mixes back through very, very nice processing and speakers and re-record the output on 1/2" or CDR or DAT to send to the mastering house, do it with Dave Gardner at Magneto.

If you want your 7" quickly and are willing to run the risk of it sounding kinda bad, send your mixes straight to United. You can also spend slightly more to have the vinyl cut somewhere else (United can still press it if you do this). Some people I know had a good recent experience doing this through Aardvark Mastering in Colorado:
http://www.aardvarkmastering.com

You should at least check out their site, as it has good info explaining what's the difference between mastering and pressing and what not.

I get my vinyl masters done by Mark at Prarie Cat (formerly Metropolis) outside Chicago. He is meticulous and prompt (same day in/out on 7" cuts) a 7" costs about 150-200 to cut depending on the length and speed. I highly recommend getting Prarie Cat or Aardvark to cut your master and skip the in house mastering at United or wherever you are pressing your records. I press all my vinyl at United, but for short runs you might want to look into Musicoll in columbus, they specialize in short runs. Bill Smith is also an excellent pressing plant. There used to be this place in California K Disk that was THE place to have vinyl mastered, but they went under about ten years ago. They had that old school Capitol Records CRUNCH, loud at any volume. Cutting vinyl masters is a lost art.
