About a year ago, a little longer, my car broke down and since B & S has a monopoly on AAA tows and more importantly because it was a sunday, they had to bring my car there (my AAA plan only tows to the nearest garage.) Turns out it was my timing belt, the whole thing was fucked, etc. So we spent the $$ to fix it. Now I brought it back to my regular guy for some maintenance. In the process of replacing my water pump he notices that the timing belt is already worn. He takes it off and sees that the plastic housing was replaced incorrectly and there's a little hole punched in the belt. They also used a Napa belt which is no good on a high end foreign car. My mechanic offers to replace the belt with no extra labor. Great. Then I get a phone call from him saying he wants me to come in and look at something. Uh oh. It turned out that the B&S yahoos didn't use a puller to remove the pulleys, they used a prying tool and damaged the underlying metal. They damaged it in such a way that now if that gasket under there needs to be replaced they wouldn't be able to get a new one back in. That, and they torqued all the bolts down so hard it took my mechanic way longer than normal to take this stuff apart. Luckily this is a 10 year old car with 130,000 miles on it. But that's not really the point, is it? I could just as easily be stuck with a 5 year old car with 75,000 miles and a good chance of irreparable wear & tear down the road. And I hate to think what would have happened had that fucking timing belt broken again in 10,000 miles. The point is: Don't go there. IP: Logged |

I used to work for a flower shop downtown delivering flowers. We took care of all van business at Bobby & Steve's.I bring the van there one evening to get the battery replaced. Left the van overnight, went back next morning. The thing wouldn't start. I ask one of the guys to jump start it. He charges me $40.00!! To jumpstart a battery that was just purchased from them. Is this the place on Washington at 35W? If so I called AAA and those guys came out to tow my car to my mechanic Cedar Garage 43rd and Cedar great place by the way. It was a Sunday so I just dropped it off and left them a note. On the way over the guys like we can fix it for you today blah blah blah and I'm like no that's ok thanks though. It was cold out so I asked the guy for a ride back to my house less than a mile away and he puts up a stink. Fuck him glad I didn't have them repair it. IP: Logged |

Funny, gilligan I was just about to post the exact same story!!! The guy tried to get me to take it there and was like "we can fix it today" and I wanted a ride back and the guy said something to the effect of, while we're not suppposed to give rides if we're not towing etc...

You guys totally dodged a bullet! I think their employees are trained to say certain things, like "we can fix it today" and such. Another thing they did...I had a flat tire and they're the only ones who do work after hours. They said, "All your tires are shot." I said, "funny, the two front ones are only a month old." They said, "Oh, well, no those are okay." "So replace the flat one and we'll be on our way." "I can't let you drive out of here with four different tires." what ever. IP: Logged |

Homer: Now, this wheel balancing is free, right? Worker: Oh, you betcha, absolutely. Deh, uh, oh, uh-oh, wait a minute. These tires won't take a balance! Homer: They won't? Worker: Nah, nah, no, you hear that clunk? [knocks on wheel] Homer: No ... Worker: Well, that tells me you need four new tires. Homer: Really? Worker: Yeah. Legally, I can't even let you drive outta here on these. Homer: Oh, please, can't you let me slide this time? Worker: Gee, I'd really like to, but if my boss found out, I ... [makes a quick hand gesture to his boss] Boss: All right, what's going on over here? Were you gonna let this man drive out of here on unsafe tires? Worker: No boss, I swear! Boss: Ah, that's it, you're fired! Homer: No! Wait! This is all my fault! Oh, if I could only turn back the clock and buy four new tires ...

They always use the "I can't let you drive outta here like that" shit. I feel the urge to go there with one disconnected wire and see what they say. Then slug the fucker and drive away. People like this really piss me off. My co-worker knows a kid who works there and says it is a total fucking scam. Someone please report them to the Better Business Bureau.IP: Logged |

They told me that they needed to replace our radiator. They made us sign a waiver before they would give us the keys. Two years later and the same radiator is just fine. Bastards.IP: Logged |

Okay, so here's a question: I need my car fixed, and I live in Saint Paul. Are there any good mom and pop style mechanics that anyone might recommend? Last time I went to Midas and got the shaft - without any lube job, either...IP: Logged |

Look for a busy gas station in your neighborhood with a garage and lots of cars parked near the garage. Go in and introduce yourself and see what the vibe is like. There _are_ honest mechanics out there and they are at least as likely to work at a neighborhood service station as anywhere else. My girlfriend and I have had to have a bunch of different kinds of work done and have been shocked by how competent and honest a lot of the local businesses in our neighborhood (south mpls) are. Just this week we called the plumber who did two other jobs for us to ask about a busted disposal and rather than sell us one and get paid to install it he talked us through how to fix it ourselves. -p IP: Logged |

I have decided once I get my new digital camcorder I am going to go have some fun at Bobby and Steve. It will feel so good to be a mechanic and fuck those little bitches around. I think I will borrow my parents car, unplug a sensor and the story will follow this. "I took my dads car while he is out of town and now it's messed up. He is going to kill me unless I get it fixed before he comes back. Please let me know what it is and how soon I can fix it." All the time taping it and setting up for the kill. Once they give me the huge estimate I tell em I am a mechanic and they are full of shit. Also reveal the camcorder to them and tell them to fuck off. Then walk away laughing. I've been taking vehicles to Star One Auto for about six years now, and they've always done right by me. Corner of 42nd & Hiawatha, so maybe they're a bit out of the way for most people. I just had my van at Lyndale Auto (28th & Lyndale) for a serious stalling problem. It was there twice, and all I got was "I don't know what your problem is, but it runs great for us." Course, it would stall multiple times as I pulled out of their lot; bottom line, I think they just didn't want to deal with it, 'cos I took it to Star One and, lo and behold, they figured it out right off the bat. Fuck Lyndale Auto Service!IP: Logged |

Hamline-Hoyt auto repair (interestingly enough, on the corner of Hamline and Hoyt in Falcon Heights, barely north of Como Park) is great. They are family owned, stand by their work, and are always significantly below what most others cost. Also very helpful and polite. They will show you what is wrong and explain why it might need fixing. I have also brought in my car and left with a $15 repair because they fixed something minor and didn't hunt for something costly to "fix." The only drawback is that they book up to one week out...they're great at what they do, so they are busy.IP: Logged |
