I got a hot deal on Strat. The only problem is it has the WORST finish on it. We're talking evergreen mixed with puke!Anyway, I tried using some 320 grit with my palm sander. It kinda gums up. I'm going to just go with a black finish. Maybe I don't need to get the old shit off?? Any input on the best way to do this? The Big O IP: Logged |

is it a new strat? i believe there's an expression about polishing a turd... talk to nathan at willies. or woody, the repair guy there, used to do refin's. if you run into dave g, i know he's had two p bass' rifined in the last few years and both look amazing.

Its a new strat. Its like a transperant green! Its odd. What were they thinking. I guess, in all honesty, its not too bad. Just bad enough for my taste. I like darker colors. The components are going to be changed as well. I have Texas Specials going in the bridge and middle (from one of my other strats). I have a Seymour single coil called a Quarter Pounder that I like that I'm might be puttin' in the bridge. Mark from Plate-O-Shrimp has a Lace Blue series he likes. I'm going to give it a try too and see if I like it. Otherwise I might stick with the Texas Specials. I have to talk to Woody this week about an order anyway. Thanks for the input. I though about that but I was worried about that stuff getting in the joints and eating away the glue. Must not be a problem though. I just need to calm my fucking ass down on stage! The Big O IP: Logged |

I'd make sure the hardware works and that it stays in tune and leave the finish as is, if you can rock, no one cares what your guitar looks like.IP: Logged |

Oh Noooo! Sounds like he already attacked it with sandpaper, too late! Chemical stripper wont mess with the glue and will easily take off the paint, if its paint! its probably a ureathane finish which is why it's gumming up the sandpaper, and most paint strippers wont work, try AirCraft Remover by Kleen Strip as recomended by. http://home.flash.net/~guitars//ReRanch101.html Which also looks like a very comprehensive guide to DIY refinishing. Jzzz,You called it. (BTW, Re-Ranch is awesome!) I used stripper. It worked great. Next step after clean up and 600 wet sand is grain filler. Then I'll probably use a shellac (no relation to Steve Albini) primer white. Followed by heavy black (my favorite color). Tons of clear coat follow. After a polishing, the gear goes on. The final touch is all the dings and scratches that happen with years of being a goofball on stage! :-) The Big O P.S. ReRanch sells manuafactorers' match paint. Cool!! IP: Logged |
