Anyone have any thoughts on a small practice amp that's also good for recording? My recording studio, also known as my kitchen, is small so room is an issue. I'd like to keep the price around $100.00.IP: Logged |

I have a 1970s solid state Ampeg G-18 that I got for something like $80 at Music Go Round. It sounds pretty damned good. Hasn't replaced my "real" Ampeg and Sunn heads for shows/recordings but I use it constantly for practice, demoing parts for my bandmates, and some overdubbing. If all you're going to record is harsh rock stuff, try various 80s Peaveys at pawn shops. The Special and Bandit are underrated in that specific application. I also have a completely trashy Randall combo that I got for next to nothing... fine for practice, and I even used it for recording and shows... hear it in action here: http://www.snackbag.com/sounds/mp3/penelope.mp3 (it's the one playing the intro and rhythm parts) -p IP: Logged |

You should look at one of those old Fender Champs. You can get the ones from the 70's for around $100. I have a couple of them. You can keep the volume in the middle and get a cool tone. You turn the volume all the way up and you have one of the best punk sounding amps in the world. Also, they made the Fender Vibro Champ. Its the same but has a vibrato channel. I don't use virbrato, but for some reason I like the Vibro Champs regular sound better. You might want to check with Willy's. They usually have a shit load on hand. The Big O IP: Logged |
