The original Blu Hippos 1st flyer (~1980 or 1981). Paul Osby,Paul Paiement and Gump (?) banging on their instruments in a livingroom when they were 14 or 15.
Any fond recollections out there?

I was living in a house in South Mpls, on 8th street, with Carol Weston. We decided it would be a fine thing to have a party. We thought it would be just a few select friends, but you know how it goes! The place was packed, half the people I had never seen before. A group of 13 or 14 year old boys showed up, they were the boys of the Blu Hippos. They proceeded to get very drunk and then decided it would be a good idea to shave their heads in the bathtub. I walked in to find them using a Lady Bic, and blood and hair every where. They probably had never shaved before! Needless to say, at that moment I knew the party was out of hand. They were though a nice bunch of boys, and very polite. They even thanked me for the use of my razor.

In 1981, I was given Paul Paiemont's number, because there weren't many 14-15 year old punk rockers in South Minneapolis. I called him up, and went over dere to Nordeast. Soon I began hanging with Paiemont, and Osby, and Mickey(Montana later)and Sue, and Kaye (R.I.P.)and Gump.

They were all quite a bit of fun, and had a nice little scene going in Nordeast/Columbia Heights. Gump hated me, cause "I cramped his style." A little later on I auditioned for singer for The Blue Hippos, 'cause Osby wanted to concentrate on guitar. They were going to make a decision, and then Osby ran away from home. His parents were kind of weird religious types, his dad spoke in tongues. Anyway next thing, they formed Todlachen.

Somewhere, I have a tape of them playing in a basement up Nordeast from probably '82?
On a slightly related note, I also am trying to find the tape I have of what became Rifle Sport "auditioning" "singers" in the same basement. Tom Hazelmeyer and Taras Ostroushko were among the lucky contenders.
Tom would probably want to kill me if anyone ever heard him belting out anarchist lyrics in his best Johnny Rotten impersonation.

There's video too somewhere, I remember at First ave. they used to show it on the big screen...some of us even hope this stuff is all gonna be available eventually...find those tapes ZOM!!! An update on Osby would be interesting too...is he still "missing", more or less? What a waste...I don't care if he still wants to play that souped-up boogie crap the second version of the Hippos specialized in, I just hope he still enjoys playing guitar...Does anyone have a flyer for the Duffy's show that was the Huskers, Replacements and Blu Hippos?

There first record they put out was great. Haven't listened to it in awhile. I think I will tonight. Minneapolis's version of the Meat Puppets.

Beving, he might be right 'cause he was definitely living in Nordeast around that time, and I know Paiemont, and Osby knew him.

Osby, Osteen, and Paiement all lived pretty near each other off Johnson in nordeast. I didn't recall Osteen and Osby getting along very much so I called up Paul P. to doublecheck. He rememberred Yuck Foo's tryout and said it probably could have worked but the timing was wrong. Also, Nikki didn't drum with The Blu Hippos, but he did drum acouple songs with his first band Expressionless Agony when they switched instruments for a song or 2 and he did play drums with The Thalidomide Kids for awhile.

When I was in college at the U of M in the early 80's, I was looking for a band so I used to answer musicians wanted ads. Either from City Pages or posted ads around campus. I answered one during that time that I swear was for Blu Hippos. I called the number provided, which turned out to be Paul Osby's, and a band mate of his called me and told me not to call Paul at home because his parents were so weird about Paul playing music. I was confused because I got Paul's number from the ad. I think I talked to the guy a couple of times, but never did get to "audition."

Around 1981, they played a show in my friend Leah's basement out in Hopkins. It may have very well been the location of the first flyer in this thread. Here's a pic of Osby -- photo credit Joel Wolfe.

I also had Osby on one of my first TV shows at Park. No comments necessary about the outfit and hairdo, please I think this was the same year...

this isn't necessarily an OLD, per se, blu hippos story, but it may have been one of the last times i saw them... i was living in san francisco with a guy i met, probably seeing the blu hippos at mcad; sean was a student there at the time, on an exchange program to san francisco art institute...

blu hippos were playing at 'the viz' in s.f., i think november 1986. i was so excited, i had no friends whatsoever in s.f., totally homesick, and i knew there would be lots of people from mpls there...

so the band goes on, plays literally 3 songs, they take a quick break and one of the band members (no names mentioned) passed out in the bathroom... shortest set i've seen to this day.

last time i saw al, he and his wife (whose name i can't remember) were living outside of ely on a big spread near grant young's resort. totally cleaned up, totally healthy-quite a change from the al i knew in the mid 80's...but of course he was still gorgeous in that late 70's rock star kind of way...

I saw Al recently at a mutual friends wedding, he looks great. Is living up north near Ely, with his wife Germaine. Saw Osby walk into Holy Land deli in Nordeast recently. He didn't look well.

I, John Gump, was the first drummer for the Blu Hippos. That anyone remembers us is truly astounding to me. That so many remember us fondly stretches my credulity almost to the breaking point. If I hadn't just read this stuff I would never have believed it. But some clarification is in order. The first Blu Hippos never drank or used any drugs. This was a point of pride for Osby. I know that he went on to be a walking advertisement for Alanon, but he was only 14 at the time, and he amused himself with more innocent pleasures like stealing shit from my moms freezer. The second Blu Hippos came about much later and by that time I was studying classical music (don't hate me!!!) so I was totally out of the loop.
Yuck Foo: Who are You? I remember being referred to as a "hippie" by numerous hostile folks who thought that I didn't fit the bands profile, but God damn this was a long time ago! Please forgive me if I was rude. I was alienated as all hell, given the fact that I was an outsider among outsiders.
In any case my current band is The November Criminals. Please check out our mp3s at http://thenovembercriminals.iuma.com. Our Bass player just left us (nasty little shit). But we are alive and kicking. (does anyone know where Paiment is?)

wow osby is still alive?
I used to play trumpet with them for a very short while in 87. I only remember playing live with them twice (I wasnt very good) once at the Uptown and once opening for the cro-mags somwhere near riverside.
A couple of weeks after I stopped playing with them their album got a good review in Rolling Stone. Loved their music but never new they had originally formed sooo long ago.

Well, that's all Phil ever calls him, but yes, jimmy or jimbo, or J.P. or something COULD be a nickname, I don't know the man well enough to go about that. Nor would I call Steve "the little weed", oui et non?

Mais oui. Having known said Petroski since 1978, I take liberties with the name.
A certain Tippy created the Lunar Gel-Craft nickname, much to the recipient's dismay.
It escapes me why the guy doesn't play drums anymore, he's really good. I was told Iffy wanted him to play the tubs but he declined the offer.

That's a bummer, not that I'm a huge Iffy fan, but that he should be playing. As I recall, he's a Slingerland man, much like myself.

If memory serves me, the Lunar Gel-Craft was originally the nickname of Gelly's automobile. The name just stuck to Jimmy over time. And yes, Gelly should be drummin'.
