My band's CD received a nice review in the current issue of Lost Cause. The reviewer stated that we reminded her of "ballsy British girl punk from the 1970s," which sounds really cool. This threw me into a tizzy however as I don't know any of that stuff and only the X-Ray Spex come to mind as a possible qualifier but I think they may have been an early 1980s band...true?

I'd appreciate any help in "discovering" our 1970s influences (besides the ones we already have) that people could provide. I'd think there might be some overlap with '60s U.S. garage bands but I'm all ears as I haven't discovered any new (to me) music in some time.

Help!

X Ray Spex were definately "class of '77", by 1980 1/2 of the band (Jack Airport and BP Hurding)had formed the New Romantic group Classix Nouveaux.

The only other balsy brit bands I can think of would be Penetration and maybe The Stinky Toys (from France).

The Raincoats, The Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees are all too arty to be comparable.

Thanks Ollie! I had a hunch you'd be the first to respond. Now to start hunting for the buried treasure.

The Poison Girls might be a little too late (early '80s). But, Vi Subversa was definitely ballsy. And they were definitely British. Sonic?

Nice that you got a good write-up, but seems to me whoever wrote this doesn't know much about 70s British punk as there were very few girl punk bands that recorded anything. Kleenex was German, I think, Stinky Toys were French. X Ray Spex only had a girl singer, and the Adverts only had Gaye Advert on bass, no singing as I recall.
So maybe it looks good on paper, but there really isn't anything to back up a comment like that.
Now don't you people start with the "pissing on this thread" shit, I'm really glad for the band, I just don't like spurious journalism.

That's what I was trying to say in my first response. All I could think of was Penetration, with singer Pauline Murray.

MAYBE the author of said review just phrased it poorly. It's possible they meant that the band has the sound of balsy brit punk from the 70's, and the band has a girl singer, instead of meaning that the band sounds like a balsy brit band of girls.

Kleenex/Liliput came "aus die Scweiz", FYI, and the 2CD comp that came out recently on Kill Rock Stars definitely has some "ballsy"moments, but, um, why use that icky term to denote powerful femme rock action? Anyway, good sixtes girl rock would be Suzi Quattro's early group the Pleasure Seekers n' their awesome "What a way to die" single(avail. as a re-ish, ask Trehuis), The Luv'd Ones from Chicago ("Truth Gotta stand" LP on Sundazed), the CD by "She" from Sacramento on Big Beat(UK), AND, last but not least, thee awesome Continental Co-ets from, like, Pipestone, who had some great sixties tunes, incl. one called "Medley of Junk"! They're on a comp. called "Roof garden jamboree" that came out a few years ago on the Arf-Arf label, plus there's a pic sleeve single too - again, ask Trehuis.

Right On my friends, as they would say.
I might mention our own Radio for Teens in that misnamed category of "ballsy" girl punk. They played here around '82-83 or so, Polly Alexander, later of Tetes Noires sang and played rhythm guitar, along with Tim Alexander on lead guitar and vocals. They have something on Kitten, a record everyone into Mpls. punk should own .

Kitten is a tape/cd dude.

Yeah, my guess is not that the reviewer was making reference to some obscure band that Paul has never heard of but is instead only informed about punk in a most cursory manner. Lost Cause is an interesting magazine for whatever their target audience is, but the reviews I've read of punk releases were sophmoric at best, insulting at worst. I'm not trying to put them down, I mean I would do a terrible job of reviewing hip hop or jazz.

By the way, "ballsy" is bad rock critic jargon. I use terms like Critcal, Crucial, Brutal, Sick, Wicked, Boss, Radical, Intense etc. It also helps to use 70's rock critic lingo like All Killer No Filler, Desert Island record etc. I would never use Ballsy reviewing a record, although I have said a record was "all balls an no brains"

YAAY, someone remembers The Gymslips! I bought their sole LP unheard, based on an NME review. Not exactly ballsy, but good dumb fun. (The band was originally called The Renees, but pronounced to rhyme with "teeny" for some reason.)

"We're the Renees, here we come
One two three and up your bum
We're the Renees...HERE WE COME!"

Thanks Zomzom and to all others for confirming that I'm not as ignorant as I thought. One of the things I like best about this board is that people are willing to give thought to and argue about innocuous questions such as the one I posed above.

Ballsy British girl punk from the 70's?
GIRLSCHOOL

Okay, so they got all rockin'roll/metal when Lemmy grabbed on to them, but they still kicked ass.

Los Gatos Blancos, the one-show band that Patti Rhodes, myself, and Babindy had covered "Take It All Away" by Girlschool. Classic stuff, but much more in line with bands like UFO than The Goochers.

which Zeros? The Chula Vista band? If so their good stuff was on Bomp. Look for any CD comp with "wimp" and other late 70's songs on it. They got back together in the 90's and although still OK, are not as on it as they were in the late 70's.

was it the old so cal band? Mexican dudes with skinny ties playing melodic and catchy yet kinda raw punk? They have a song "wimp" on the Best of Bomp LP which we have at Extreme Noise also probably some sort of CD retrospective. There was this other band the "purple haired" zeros from LA in the early 90's but they were generic pop punk. Also there was a Zeros from NYC in the early 80s but I don't know much about them.

The Mexican Zeros only had male members, one of which was Robert Lopez, aka El Vez. One of the Ecovedos was in there too, Alejandro maybe?
