No, I am not Bung Lao, but I have had some contact with PJ, but not for some time. Last winter I was talking with him pretty regularly. He's in really bad shape. proof we can't party like 20-year-olds forever. He's going to die soon. It's kinda fucking sad.

Let's hear some stories about him, I know he pissed off about 85% of Minneapolis.

I remember standing right next to PJ when he spat upon Courtney Love. I think it was the Uptown, first time Hole came thru. As he was walking away, she leaned over to hit him with the headstock of her guitar, but it was kind of a half-hearted attempt. She later retold the story like she wound up and completely decked him with it.

I guess that I am in the lucky 15% in Mpls. I can't think of a time that P.J. ever really pissed me off. Like Yuck, I had been sseing him around a bit last summer, fall, or whatever, but haven't heard much from him recently. He was not been looking so wellwhen I did see him. Last that I had heard he was staying at a place out towards Bryn Mawr. I always liked this guy; I'll try to think of some stories.

I was first on the bill for some damn show or other, and his band (That Darned Cat? I think) played the middle slot. They seemed to abandon their set list and play whatever pleased them. I'd left my set list onstage, and he started making up songs and his own lyrics, based on my song titles. It warmed the cockles of my heart.

I remember seeing That Darn Cat at the entry at the end of 1987? It was some kinda best bands of the year showcase or something. There weren't many bands to like back then and TDC did had merit, I thought. The only song I remember of theirs was "This Town", which was about dope.

Later on I saw TDC at the Uptown in 1988. It was the first time I had seen a member of the band play with his back to the audience. Shawn Pike played facing the drum kit cuz he couldn't hear out of one ear and needed to hear his own amp/monitor. I thought that was fucking cool. Soon after however, I grew to dispise any other band who did the same because they did so out of habit, i.e. performing just like in the practice space-BORING. Anyway, between almost every son his Lordship would say "my name is Peter John and I'm 22 years old".

I saw TDC a third time in St. Joe, MN in 1988 at Sal's Bar and they sucked! They continually fell apart and his grace kept on mumbling stuff like "this song is called go and fuck yourself" and "this song isn't one because we don't have any".

Later on, Peter John became "The King" and began to scrawl 5 pointed crowns all over the place with "The King" written underneath. Slowly, the monarchy took hold and his reign began.

As a matter of fact, I DO have a photo of a famous Mpls ex-rockstar licking PJ's ass at the Uptown Bar. I'd post it. but I don't want to embarrass the poor guy, he's had enough trauma in his life. Besides. my scanner's broken.

Yes, Peter John is dead. People just found out about it this summer but he's been dead for at least a year and a half. There's a thread about this somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. His mother died before him with diabetes complications; his death was supposedly diabetes and alcohol abuse related. He's buried in a cemetary in Northeast, but we haven't gone to look for it yet. Shawn Pike found out what happened to him when he called Peter John's grandmother. If I find the thread, I'll post a link for you, Bung Lao!
