oh fuck must've been about 1980... can't really remember the first mook... but there was this really hateful hippy in my art class, who would always make a gun with his index finger at me, and go "Awwwwwright... Diamond Dave" He actually wasn't so much a hippy as this dirty long haired burn outIP: Logged |

Well my folks were intellectual academic beatnik types, they were preety hip... used to hang out in Chicago and see a lot of Jazz, Blues, were very leftist, my ma was a trotskyite, they were into the kind of hipster thing of their time, like Lenny Bruce, Allen Ginsburg, Vietnam protests, and shit... They were too old to be hippies, even though my mom was pretty much a sandal wearing granola chewing earth mama.... My dad was a two fisted English professor, Super alcoholic, drunk all the time...They had me when they moved here to Minneapolis, and I remember all these huge drunken parties my parents would throw where all the English department professors, at the U of M, would come over and get shitfaced and trash our house. I remember one night when they got plastered and took a sledgehammer and opened up the wall between the living room and dining room... about 3 in the morning... So that was kind of interesting...I led a pretty outsider childhood, never had a ton of friends as a boy, didn't really fit in... wasn't too big on diso, all the kids at school would be listening to disco, and my big thing was to go to the library and check out old comedy records Old comedy was something I collected, Fred Allen, Jack benny, Burns and Allen, Nichols and May, Reiner and Brooks, etc...My folks would always buy me the worst clothing, so I( felt really outside compared to all the kids with Sergio Valente designer jeans... I had cruddy wranglers, and polyester rugby shirts IP: Logged |

In 1979 we moved to England because of a transfer program my Dad was in at the U of M. We exchanged houses with an English family for a year... I was never consulted or asked if I wanted to go... I wasn't really into the experience at first... My dad had pretty much just gone through Alcohol treatment and was acting like a freak, and I was not really into my family... I didn't want to be near them... I was really into TV at the time... and English TV sucked, because it shut off at 11:00 PM , and at that time there were only two channels, BBC 1 and BBC 2, the other channel ITV was on strike at the time. So I was miserable.

We lived in Sussex, south England, an ugly little village named Ditchling... it was about 45 miles south of London, and about 11 miles north of Brighton... actually when we moved there they had just finished shooting Quadrophenia in BrightonIP: Logged |

hmmm...well I was actually into Billy Joel after the whole comedy thing (a little embarrassed to admit) The Stranger and 52nd Street were the only two musical albums I had ever bought... well except for the soundtrack to Grease and The soundtrack to Hair... My sister had bought Devo: Are We Not Men, and The Clash: Give 'em enough rope... and I had started to listen to those two before we actully went to the UK.IP: Logged |

Had to wear the little school boy uniform kinda like Angus from AC/DC, except no shorts... It was pretty weird, they were on a much higher accelerated learning system there...harder studies... All the kids there were fascinated by America and really resentful of it, used to get a ton of shit from them... got into a lot fights, but also made a few good friends... one really interesting thing at that time, was that almost all of the kids were really into music, and there were all these little subsects, there were the punk rockers, the disco kids, the rockers, the mods, and the rude boys, the kids there were way more into scenes, and culture than the kids in America... evry Wednesday morning on the way to school we'd all buy the NME, and read it throughout the day... life in England was also pretty boring, so I joined the Rugby and the Cricket teams, and my dad made me join the boy scouts... which I later got thrown out of... also, once I got invited to a few parties there, I made better friends cause we'd all get drunk together... my first party I went to was all these 12 year old kids, and the mother of one of em was dishing us up hard cider... as much as we wanted, and we all got pissed, and fought and made out with girls for the first time...IP: Logged |

Well at first I was just "That bloody Yank" Then because of Quadrophenia, and The Jam, and The Lambrettas, and The jags, and this whole MOD revival thing I was a mod...went out and bought a parka, and fred Perry style shirts, only cheaper knockoffs, and a Harrington jacket, etc... then there was that whole 80's SKA explosion, I got really into all the 2-Tone bands, Specials, Selecter, Madness, etc... so I started wearing braces, and wrap around sunglasses, and loafers, etc... I made the mistake of keeping my mod parka, and putting ska badges on it, and most of the kids there thought I was the biggest poseur... big fashion faux pauxs.

Y'know on The televison there, they'd have shows like Top of the Pop's and The old Grey Whistle Test, and even kid morning shows like Tiswas where they'd have cool bands and show videos...so i got exposed to a bunch of cool bands like Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, the Jam, Stranglers, Splodgenessabounds, etc.... the first album I bought in England was The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan and the last album before I left was The Great Rock 'n' roll swindle double album by the sex pistols and listened to almost everything in between... had a little grudge against punk rock... cause the scenes were so divided there...and my sister was into punk... so I had to forge my own identity I thought. I saw only two concerts there... cause almost all of the shows were bar shows 18+... the two shows I saw were The Police, for the Regatta De Blanc album, and Bob Marley on his last tourIP: Logged |

Not well... I had developed an accent which was novel for a little while... but all the kids I had considered friends had really turned their backs on me when I came back... the biggest thing was that I had gotten my ear pierced in England, and that was just too way out for these close minded little fascist jocks. They all just thought I was the biggest freakIP: Logged |

Drank for the first few times in England... when I got back I was screaming to get some pot... me and my friend Frank Parsons went and scored some pot at the Hennepin Lake Bowling alley from some burnout the first time... then in 8th grade, my best friend was Tommy Stinson, we'd go over to his house and his brother Bob would always have weed, also that's when I first snorted crank and cocaineIP: Logged |

Not really... I've always been a little hyper fucker, and speed was always nerve wracking for me... I immediately began to smoke tons of pot daily... I look back on it and think I might have been self medicating some form of Hyperactivity disorder or something... it didn't stop me from taking a ton of speed though, mainly benzedrines and white cross amphetamines.IP: Logged |

My earliest memory of shooting up was in like 9th grade, and I had this friend who after a party asked me if I wanted to... and I said fuck yeah... I always thought that it was a cool degenerate thing to do...y'know Sid Vicous and Lenny Bruce, etc... I think he fixed me up up about a half dozen phenobarbitols, and I immediately went to sleep... I don't think I ever shot up again until about 4 years laterIP: Logged |

Pretty much just parties... I would hang out with the replacements, and when they'd play like a homecoming dance or a prom I'd go and be a roadie for 'em... I remember the walker art center had a few shows like the replacements and curtiss a valentines show... also I remember seeing Husker Du at an all ages show in a hall somewhere for the first time... and there would be like dances at MCAD where Rifle Sport would play and they'd bring me along... but a lot of bands I'd see at parties in basements, because I was too young to get into any of the bars... I'd try and sneak in with a band and pretend I was a roadie, but a bouncer would always come along just before the doors opened and kick me out. I used to leave my house at about 12:30AM, and head downtown and wait out in front of First Avenue to find out where the parties were... couldn't get into bars at least until Goofy's Upper Deck opened up.IP: Logged |
