Maybe zom could help me with this mystery once and for all. In 1988 I was living in the bottom of a duplex in the 2400 block of Garfield. It was actually immortalized in the song "Red House" on the out of print first Cows album. Anyway, we had a painting party one Saturday night. Meaning that we provided a variety of paint and put paper all over the walls in the dining room and encouraged people to be creative.

That night Rapeman was playing the Entry and I think Rifle Sport might have opened the show. Somehow word got out that we were the party to be at that night and various scensters showed up. Shanon Selberg was there (thats when he told me he used to live there and about the song) Grant Hart etc... I think some or all Rifle Sporters (were you there zom?) and Albini walks in and politly asks if it is OK to be there. I say sure. Anyway... the party was starting to get out of hand after awhile, people painting where they were not suposed to, on the woodwork... (I remember "yanomamos" painted somewhere, that was Grant's instrumental band) And at some point a smoke bomb went off and cleared out the party! Kind of a blessing actually because then no more damage was done.

For some reason we always suspected Albini because of his love of setting off firecrackers at Big Black shows and stuff. But really we never found out for sure who did it and why. Hmmmmmmm.....

As addled as my brain is, I have memories of that.
I don't recall said individual setting off a smoke bomb, that is not to say it did not or could not happen.
I remember having a large quantity of liquid vials of Deutsch Stinkbomben that we deployed all over First Ave around that time.
Sulfurous good times....

I lived on the second floor of the Red House at about the same time! Weird, huh?

I did enter the 7-11 on 24th and Lyndale minutes after an Albini stink bomb that night.

While I may have been a little blotto myself I was downstairs when that happened and Albini was making a hasty retreat almost immediately. Although I did not see him light it, there seemed to be a general consensus that he did.

I had no reason to ruin a perfectly good party! I think Albini was pissed because some girl was ripping the "shitty band (Rapeman) that played in the entry" the night of the party . I think his feelings were hurt and he lashed out or it may just have been he thought us a bunch of stupid posers.
