these two films are definitely of interest to the community. We hope to have some activists present to discuss the media and politics (maybe some folk from arise). HORNS AND HALOS
In a time when power is trying to take away our rights, the documentary HORNS AND HALOS is particularly piercing. An inside look at the seedy underbelly of American politics and media, this absorbing film, screening at U-Film Society Fri. Dec. 6 thru Thurs. Dec 12, 9:15pm nightly, observes three men whose paths to power and popularity become tangled as the result of a controversial book called ‘Fortunate Son.’ Written by convicted felon J. H. Hatfield, the first critical biography of George W. Bush was published and then pulled from shelves by St. Martin’s Press, prompting Soft Skull’s twenty-something punk proprietor Sander Hicks to attempt a reissue. But with Bush gaining in the polls, it wouldn’t be easy.
The Trials of Henry Kissinger
Fri. Nov. 22 thru Wed. Nov. 27, 7:15pm nightly
Featuring previously unseen footage, newly declassified U.S. government documents, and revealing interviews with key insiders from Kissinger's White House years, THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER examines charges facing the former Secretary of State and Nobel Peace Prize winner -- is he also a war criminal? Focusing on his role in three key events - America's secret bombing of Cambodia in 1969, the approval of Indonesia's genocidal assault on East Timor in 1975, and the assassination of a Chilean general in 1970 -this new film also examines the possibility that Kissinger, by sabotaging the 1969 Paris peace talks to further Nixon's candidacy and his own concomitant rise to power, bears responsibility for all the deaths in Vietnam from 1969 to 1975.
