Fantastic! I was at this show!!!!!!!! (assuming it was October 1984, I know they played the entry a year or so later Nov 1985 too which of course I was also at) The next day (OK get this) First I went to Grant Hart's apartment to interview them, got a great interview. Then I drove out into the country to watch my Grandpa and Grandma take a hot air balloon ride we had all given them for their anniversary. Then I went to The Whole Coffee house on the U of M campus and was a "plant" in an Impaler show! I ran up on stage dressed like a geek yelling "this obscenity must end..." and Bill Lindsy pretended to kill me and pull fake liver from my stomach. THEN I went down to the Entry again to see the Frogs and met up with the Buttholes again who were hangin' out at that show. Ah those were the days! I also got em to sign my Brown Reason to Live EP. At a later show in the mainroom I got them all to sign a fake plastic butt which is still hanging in my home office! IP: Logged |

Just a question: how old are the butthole surfers? I have their electric larryland cd and I must say that is was pretty good. But if that was good then their old stuff must be 100 times better. Fill a brutha in.IP: Logged |

Crowd shot from that show. I think that's Joe Lyons (top left), don't know the girl with the cool makeup, and Michelle Stroh (SP) leaning forward. IP: Logged |

You can't see me, cuz I'm working and trying to tell a lead singer from a local band to please not inject narcotics in the toilet, and telling a guitar player from another local band to smoke the joints downstairs.IP: Logged |

Could well be, I was at that quintesential 7th St show, Big Bill Batson at the mix, the entry never sounded that good before, who knew that wooden clothes pins were punk rock too.

Yep that's me alright, B. W. I had a broken nose at that show and spent the night trying to keep anyone from so much as bumping it. That show was so great! Afterward a bunch of us went to someone's house (I think it was Paul Sinclair's) and watched Pink Flamingos. The best part of all was when Paul from the Butthole Surfers couldn't stand to watch it for another minute because it grossed him out so badly. I thought that was beautifully ironic. IP: Logged |

Jesus, what a night...I think that's me with the glasses near the front! there's a video of this out there somewhere, or at least there was, I've seen it...went with Shannon Selberg and Chris Letcher, tripping moderately hard, when we got there Bob Mould was going in on the guest list with a friend, some dumbass shouted "fag" at him or something similar and Bob was more than ready to clean the guy's clock, rightly so...so we're like the last three people to get in before it's sold out, we're standing around for maybe 5 seconds and it's"ladies and gentlemen, from Austin, the Butthole surfers", and then the most cathartic and satisfying set I have ever witnessed(x-cept for Godheadsilo in SF once, oh, and the Swans' first MPLS. appearance in the entry, and...)unfolds...brilliant. after the show me Chris and Shannon and their coke-jonesing neighbor sat up for hours drinking Singha and listening to Jean loves Jezebel, trying to come down...next day Chris talks me in to visiting mr. Treehouse in detox 'cause the Butthole surfers are supposed to visit, since Mark couldn't see the show due to his "problems." So we go, Bob Mould is there too, the Buttholes' visit and it's a mad scene...we talk about the Monks, the Throbbing Gristle appreciation society of MN. that Bob helped start, and so on and so forth...yes, uber kitty, they were pretty good back then...IP: Logged |

Yeah, pretty good is about it. I always find it interesting how the "importance" or how great a show was supposed to be seems to increase as the years go by times the amount of chemicals consumed. I'm sure I've been guilty of it myself, but in this band's case, I wasn't injecting narcotics, snorting them, or taking any drugs of any sort that evening, and I have a very good recollection of the show. It was mildly amusing, sort of like looking into a garbage can full of maggots; you want to close the lid, but for some reason you're compelled to watch. Maybe if I had joined that certain singer on the toilet for an armload.....IP: Logged |

This was the only time that I saw them that they were somewhat obliterating...the "owsleyian" condition I was in did probably alter my perception, no fuckin' doubt about it, but I felt what I felt, and it's not up for arguement, sorry. IP: Logged |

and by the way zomzom, why were you even there that night if you are/were so against altered states? were you working there that night? if you were indeed a first avenue employee, that would explain the police mentality/tude...IP: Logged |

Whoa, Percodan dude! You must be getting your share of that inexpensive Northwest heroin! If you'd loosen that tourniquet for a second and re-read my post, you'll see that I even admitted that I'd been guilty of some altered states myself. Yeah, I was working there that night, and about 4-5 nights a week from '84 to '88. If us employees let everyone who wanted to snort, smoke, inject, pop or otherwise consume narcotics on the premises there would never have been a butthole or any other kind of show. Of course, I'm talking about the customers. You know the cop-like employees were all straight-edge. The real police weren't too thrilled about First Avenue. And if you were there so many years ago, aren't you a bit old to use terms like " 'tude "?IP: Logged |

'tude, dude, what's the difference...no I'm not too old. And why do you keep bringing up Heroin? I said we were "tripping"...that indicates hallucinogens. I know Chris and Shannon had reps as pretty severe spike drivers, but i can count on one hand the number of times I dabbled in "narcotics"...and that night wasn't one of them. Do you just lurk here, looking for other people's positive memories to correct and cynically put down? If so, why? Hey, my first post, I share some memories, I drop a few names, and boom, some jackass feels he has to set the record straight...how Minneapolis of you, thanks...IP: Logged |

I saw the Surfers open for the Dead Kennedys at WUST in DC in 85. Probably the biggest hardcore/punk show I've ever been too. They used lots of props a tuba and a bull horn. They played at the marble bar in Baltimore a year or so later with the car crash films and the topless dancer. Very theatrical, but I never could get into the music, even when I did drugs. And their newer "alternative rock" stuff is horrible and pretty much cancels out anything groundbreaking they did in the day. Although I'm guessing it's just one or two members carrying on the name with different music. IP: Logged |

Hi, I'm back...against my better judgement but what the hell...I believe the Form opened, somewhat incongruously...at the time, it seemed the Buttholes represented new possibilities from the speed-blitz of hardcore and the other conformist stuff we were all getting kinda tired of then...it's like they were the new Mothers of Invention, with one very important difference: Zappa and the Mothers knew what sheep their audience were, and stayed straight and over the heads of their audience, manipulating them and laughing at them; the Butthole Surfers were every bit as addled as their fans, and wallowed in the same excesses, feeding off them even. You're right Zom, the importance of this show in the long haul might be over-rated, but at the time it presented a vital breath of fresh air to the stagnating/strangling hardcore scene, offering an alternative to the borderline religious zeal of some bands to "support the scene"...that phrase always sent shivers down my spine. and while I'm at it, might I just say that Dead Moon of Portland, Oregon pretty much destroys the entire tcpunk legacy everytime they play... oh and Poison Idea are playing again, complete w/Pig Champion. thank you and good night...IP: Logged |

I have seen Dead Moon many times and I proudly sport my Dead Moon T-shirt as a enjoy them very much. However, I think that it may be a bit of a stretch to say that they destroy the TCPUNK legacy everytime that they play. They are good, but I don't know about them being that good.

You're right, it cannot be proven. It is A highly subjective opinion. All I know is, Fred Cole has been making music since '67 and a smaller proportion of his output is mediocre than anyone you care to name from the twin cities punk scene, past or present, but that sounds like the start of a new thread, one which will win me many new freinds I'm sure...that was just my smartass closing comment though, what about the rest of my sterling rock journalism? Doesn't that rate? Oh and zomx2, I think I figured out who you are, you rocked dude! with some definite 'tude!! At least I got "corrected" by someone I used to have respect for...good luck sharpening those flash skills, if you wanna see some amusing stuff along those lines check out audiodregs.com and click on mumbleboy animation, the lad is brilliant.IP: Logged |

What got me ticked was the assertion that I was too addled to understand what was going on...addled I was, but I kinda thought that was the point of a Butthole Surfers show, right or wrong. Your perspective on alot of these shows is definitely gonna be different from most people's on this board if you were working them, and I'm just gonna have to allow for that, I guess...So did ya ever drink while you were workin'? lil' bit??? You can tell us...McLellan's probably not reading, and if he is, ~intercourse~ the fellow....IP: Logged |

Drink while working? More like a lotta bit. One of the big bennies there were the more or less unlimited drink tickets and availability of certain things. However, my perspective is probably more tainted by performing than working at shows. You don't work at the club for the money, you do it 'cause you like the music. At least that's why I worked there. Free music (and beer) and lots of cool people. Even the employees: Steve was great to work for. Then there was Fred, Rod, Matt and Matt and Paul and Kevin and Roy,etc etc. But yeah, we were drinking and working. Some of those bands..ugh.....I can't imagine having to hear/ work with them without the numbing effect of drugs.

Hey y'all head on over to MP3 BUTTLEGS for lots of cool Butthole music free for the taking! They still have the entire Double Live CD up as well as some previous bootleg titles "Tejass" and "Caso Raro", and some selected studio tracks. My new favorite find is the recently put up "Live in Fort Worth" which is an entire concert from June 19th, 2002. It is a really cool show and was rockin' the ipod this morning! Surprisingly enough there are no songs from Weird Revolution included and only one or two from Electriclarryland (not the "HIT" either) but mostly good old classic Butts like Cherub, Lady Sniff, Movin' to Florida, Bar-B-Que Pope, 100 Million People Dead, John E. Smoke, The Shah Sleeps... etc. Plus at least four new songs I've never heard before. Very nice! For further Butts conversation and cool photos also see THE OTHER BUTTHOLE THREAD IP: Logged |
