Am now far far away from ye all ... but always a Twin Citian at heart ... I left ten years ago and still come back a couple times a year (at least) ... I am usually quite far away, several thousand miles away on the average day. This internet has proven to be a very good thing ... connecting us all like this ... just was sent this website URL the other day ... took a peek and ... lo and behold ... pictures of the Circle Jerks .... at Duffy's???? .... ZZZZZZZZAAAAAAPPPPPPPP ... I was vortexed into a flood plain of a million great TC memories and latent ear shattering DCB's! Rattle my cage and yank the chain! First: Let's just say I was and am still a very active music rat and are scampering over the four corners of the earth these days seeing shows and scouring the Club scenes far and near, on our shores and in other places! I am happy to report from out and about (and even, yes even, in your neck of da woods) it is still alive and has a rapid pulse ... much to the contrary belief of others who would rather play the grim reaper and send the Club scene to Rampart General (or I guess to ER these days) with a stake in its heart! I saw a few other postings in other parts of the message board that were a bit ... let us say ... negative on the local scene? I've heard THAT before. Well, maybe not even negative so much as the yearning for something more exciting or inspiring? Yearning is good. It may actually cause creative juices to rearrange notes and sounds into something new! Be down on the club scene if you will ... it simply ebbs and flows as it always has ... that is part of the process. A Darwinian thing methinks. Music always simply rears it's head out of a bubbling cauldron of the fittest or suprise rogue Recessive Traits (hmmm ... I remember that band too!) Never know what beauty or beastie will appear, and that is half the fun of it. Dr. Frankenstein would love the process. I see it as quite alive and well ... the pockets persist everywhere out there and even though the technolgy and the viewers are (both) more and in some ways much less sophisticated ... or ... (both) even more and less discriminating about what they see, it is there. Picky, Picky. I dunno ... back when I remember TC club hopping EVERYNIGHT, everybody had a more open mind to EVERYTHING! At least they'd sample it gamely before swallowing it or spitting it out (a good policy in all things I'd say). I choose not so much to be a happy happy optomist about the Club scene as simply someone who believes that "the beat goes on" in whatever form it decides to migrate in the direction of ... little sneaky minx it is ... and ... wherever someone thinks they can still generate a "Labour of Love" by opening doors of buildings and warehouses and corner joints to the ears of music enthusiasts of whatever kind of stuff they are into (and even more importantly are savy enough to still manage to keep the doors of the place open in the process). There. Enough of the drifting soap box speech about the Club scene ... bottom line, dammit, just keep going out and subject your ears to it (even if you don't like it, the least it will do is illicit a reaction). Don't ever stop! Keep your ears to the vibes .... once you stop, you will hit REALLY OLD GUY TERRITORY. No need for strolling down that road, even though this IS the TC Punk Rock Nursing Home! Onto the topics at hand: The Circle Jerks at Duffy's? Was at that show and I Had a blast! ... acutally I was at ALL of the Duffy's shows ... I lived there .... in between forays next door to Nibs, down the hall to Louie's place, the "Casnooze", down to the Longhorn Bar and then to Sam's (before and several thousand visits after) it metamorphosized into icon First Ave/7th St, the Uptown Bar, the Union, O'Gara's, The old Artist's Quarter by MCAD and just about every other watering hole, warehouse and after hours party and musical house of pleasure and pain in the TC (Minnapples and St Paul both) ... could not get enough earfuls of the tunes! Was out 7 nights a week and then some, I think just about EVERYBODY was in those days! We were all out, all the time! Rain. Snow. Summer. Winter. Blasted heat or frosbitten faces ... did not matter ... we'd all trudge out and go bar hopping. Besides the music hot spots we would start the night (or finish it) at the other places: like Nye's Polonaise Room, Liquor Lyle's, Bryant Bowl, CC Club, all the spots on the Westbank, and along Grand Ave and Snelling in St. Paul. We put the U.S. Post Office motto to the ultimate test. Duffy's back in its hayday (before it became pink and then became ... egads! ... a cinderblock and now a patch of overgrown grass ... aside: still was hoping somewhere in the back of my head that someone would have bought the place and turned it back into the Rock-and-Roll Alernative that it used to be ... too late for THAT now!) ... anyway ... Duffy's? It was just too much fun! Circle Jerks were great that night the above pictures were taken (I still have a shirt the band gave me from that show)! And other shows there??? ... geez ... where do we begin ???? 999, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Buzzcocks, T.S.O.L., R.E.M., The Naughty Sweeties, Captain Beefheart, OMD, Nina Hagen, X, XTC, The Damned, Bauhaus, Pete Shelley, John Cougar, Buster Pointexter, Shrimp Toast, The Rockabillies, the Reds, UB40, Black Uhura, Steel Pulse, (& for that matter EVERY other reggae band on the dreadlocked planet - by the by I saw a Rasta mon wearing a Duffy's t-shirt in Jamaica this last winter!), The Plasmatics, Divine, of course our own TC offspring: The Wallets, the Suburbs, Curtiss A, The Replacements & Husker Du, and then the pop scene: The Phones, The O's, Sussman Lawrence, etc. etc. etc. etc. List goes on. Everybody had their moments, even if not everybody agreed on them! Back to the Circuit: Stray Cats, Go-go's, James White and the Blacks, Iggy Pop, Duran-Duran, Chettah Chrome and the Casualties, Men at Work, Tom Verlaine, Paul Carrack's Noise to Go featuring Nick Lowe! Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, AFOS, Huey Lewis, the Professionals (Steve Jones and Paul Cook (s)ex-Pistols, and my personal favorite of all time: Henry Rollins (then frontman of Black Flag, of course) ... and several hundred others I recall and will report later (can't put them all down at once) ... damn, double damn ... let me rewind the brain pan tape and hit replay! Sorry ... you got me off on a tangent that started way back when Grace Jones played at the Longhorn Bar! Got carried away! Music can do that to a person. So I'll stop for now alright already. Will revisit this site often as the link to others of a parallel universe and I believe noteworthy past still obviously lurk out there! Good to see you still carry the torch! Let it burn (that would be at both ends please)! Those are fun pictures of the Circle Jerks! I did enjoy those immensely, as I also enjoyed that show that night so long ago! Actually, thinking about all these shows, seems like yesterday, doesn't it? Thanks for sharing! Any more pix of other bands? I'll dig through my own collection when I get back to the states and see if I can post some interesting pictures of bands in various states of performance euphoria and madness! (Madness? Hey, they played back at 26th and 26th too!) Okay, Okay ... I'll do all my gargantuan First Ave memory stuff at a later date... that should make Steve happy if he is reading this (hah!) ... he is probably stuck to his monitor right now ... how many bands was that Steve? Oh ... I'm coming into that office and I am going to dig through the pile of stuff in that closet with the archaeologists! We're gonna start carbon dating all the things in there. By the by, I think you counted some of those twice. Where are the Raybeats in all that? What about ... Don Holshue (the party and show above Yoshika's Sauna!)? David (you all know who) the cab driver! Or Kurt Nelson and his Army? Chris Osgood and David and company? Collin? Yes ... we shall go down that road soon! Big hits of Mid-America and more! I do miss those all night music hashing sessions ... you know ... where you sit up all night (either at the club, the warehouse or someone's house) and play LP's and tapes and argue with other club people about music until the sky eventually rudely gets lighter in the east and the first TC bus grinds by and signals that one must now retreat into daylight with shades welded to the face? Thought most of you would. Gotta go ... web surf's up ... keep the faith ... crank up the volume and let the bands play on! Oh, sorry BOUNCER ... last call was 45 minutes ago? Have I been yakking THAT long? No way! The bar is closed? I have to do what? Take it out to the streets? But I gotta finish my beer! (But these days it's .. well ... Evian or I wouldn't have survived to even be here typing this right now!) Hey, but who cares ... I'm like with the band. So ... anybody know the address of the party and by the way, who is playing at it tonite anyway? So the headline band for sure is coming to the party? You're sure now? Okay! Very cool. Write down the address on that napkin. Hey bartender! Yeah, you! Can I borrow that pen? Can we buy some beer for the party? No? Where the hell did I put my car keys? Say bartender, could I borrow a couple of bucks for gas? No? Yeah BOUNCER I am heading for the door ... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Hey, I'm Liz Leff and I wasn't even at that party. But, those were the days when I still did what my parents said and being underage at a Circle Jerks show was a no-no. By the way, my sister doesn't remember it, but that doesn't mean anything. She had a lot of parties. When I was 14 (in 1979) and my parents were out of town (and she was watching me), she had a party after work. That was the night of The Stranglers. I can still remember the lead singer (Hugh?) bending down and offering me a hit off his joint. No one knew I was 14. Can you imagine The Stranglers in St. Louis Park? Well, it happened. Were any of you there? - Lizzy

Hi..This is Laura..Liz's sister. I bartended at Duffy's through all the good/bad times. Some of the best shows were-Squeeze, OMD, Black Flag, Go Go's (they were good), Iggy Pop, and The Replacements who I always knew were destined for greatness. Local great bands The Suburbs, Flamin Oh's, Wallets, and Urban Guerillas were also highlights! I do still bartend..However now at a regular restaurant. Post any other memories you have.. Got excited when I was sent this URL address. It was like a flood of lost memories! Will drift on and off as I can ... right now I am in Florida. I do make regular jaunts back to the old haunts when I can. IP: Logged |

I am Laura's younger sister, Liz. Next time she's over, I'll show her your post. She'll reply under my name. By the way, Dwork is still a friend of hers. IP: Logged |

Yup ... in fact just got an email from Dworkin ... this would be great to catch Laura on here ... say hello to Laura from Kim ... was just up in Mpls passing thru not long ago and went to O'Gara's because it was close to who I was visiting and that's where I saw the O's performing (did that seem kind of strange or what!) ... Dworkin was there .. and the Bowery boys ... and LuAnne ... and a bunch of the "old" crowd ... it was pretty funny ... every body still looked almost exactly the same except perhaps grayer hair ... most still wearing pencil black pants and faded t-shirts (with familiar old punk band names on their shirts) ... only ones I did not see were Schendruck and the Thompson Twins ... and no Laura (?) ... so Laura if you are out there ... GAME ON!IP: Logged |
