the good...summer of '84, various numbers of us (as little as four to as many as fifteen) skating our way through south Minneapolis to the Mulloy's or someone's half-pipe in their driveway around 50th & Lyndale or to the downtown ramps, evading the police, stopping traffic and causing chaos.the bad...losing my famed Big Boys deck and finding it later, broken in two, over The Alt doorway. One day Tony NaselFace, Durf and few others were skateboarding down the middle of Franklin (Hennepin to Lyndale)...the cops stop us and tell us to get out of the street..I lip off and tell them another cop told us to stay off the sidewalk, where are we suppose to skate...the gutter? The cops says "I don't give a shit where you skate as long as it isn't in the street" So about five minutes later we're heading downtown on Hennepin and cut across the street...low and behold it's the same cop, Durf throws a fit and tosses his skateboard in the air...the cops handcuff him and throw him in the car, I get a ticket and go to court. $100 fine.IP: Logged |

A few months ago I saw Dave Larson, possibly the oldest still active skateboarder in town. He used to work at th Alt in the early '80s, and is a drummer. He played drums on the Rifle Sport Barefoot and Pregnant tape. He says he's still skating, and he must be about 50 years old now.IP: Logged |

I know Dave, he is the shit. We used to drag him down to Cannon Falls on occasion to skate a big drainage ditch.Good to hear the old fart is still kicking. Is he still the original Volvo freak? IP: Logged |

I don't know. He was at the YMCA, working out as was I. He's still drumming around town too. He quit drugs 'n drinkin', and has the family back he said.IP: Logged |

met dave back in '77, he had a long board and was the coolest adult i knew. ran into him again in the early eighties playing the survival game. he helped turn me on to hand gunning. he had this great apartment filled with guns, ammo, reloading devices etc. he had a target attached to a phone pole across the alley at the regulation 75(?) meters so he could practice holding his aim steady from the kitchen window. it's nice to hear he's doing well.

Eric Thompson I think the guy who owned the ramp had a dad that made us join the boyscouts and sign a release...and no swearing.

I remember that - it was Boneman, Tony, Ron, and me (I think) and we were skating downtown to go see some movie. Cops throw me in the car, and Tony sits down on the ground and waits. After awhile, the cops let me go and me and Tony skate on to meet up with the others at the flick. Funny thing was, on the way back, some yokels from the farm drive by giving us shit, and Boneman picks up some monster rocks and starts winging them at the car, so they skedaddle while we chase them on our decks. It was an exciting day.

the funniest skateboarding story i can think of was when me and my friend chris were skating downtown minneapolis doing bonelesses off of the back bumpers of cars and generally just pissing people off we were skating away from the metrodome and chris was in front of me and instead of landing a boneless he slipped and landed a faceplant right into the trunk of the car the guy got out and chris took off running i almost got my ass kicked but just gave the guy the finger and took off tooIP: Logged |

Saw Dave Larson yet again on Sunday, still doing it..keeps in touch with other "advanced age" skaters. I haven't been on one since '83, used to skate to practice in the Sexton bldg. downtown..never did any tricks or stuff.IP: Logged |

I had a ramp in my Bedroom at Emerson school in Duluth, half-pipe, 12' wide, 10-12'flat bottom, about 7' to vertical with a platform on one side and 8' with no platform on the other...Gary Barbo came up, John from the alt, Eric Thompson, and the crazed swede, Torsten Larsen(sp???)!!! Anyone remember him? I've seen his name in the production credits of some swedish records, namely by the post Union Carbide Productions band "Soundtrack of our lives". Once a bunch of people came up for the weekend, incl. Torsten and Gary and John and this kid who had a ramp in Edina, maybe one of the ones pictured above, anyway the kid from Edina(who's name escapes me) had skipped school the day they came up(a fri.), so we have Discharge cranked and we're "raging" or whatever and the kid's dad shows up to haul his ass home! That musta been a quiet 3 hour ride back...IP: Logged |
