I know what your thinking. Another fucking favorite thread...but tell me or post your favorite cover art, keeping it local would be nice but not a must.

okay...my favorite cover art was not a punk band, but there was a metal band in mpls called powermad i think...anyways, they put out an album that had a really nice painting of some godzilla type creature storming down nicollette mall smashing the ids tower...i first saw that record in san franciso, it made me so homesick, damn..i knew i shoulda bought it.

I think Powermad may have covered "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" on that album, so maybe they have a punk influence.

If it's local bands, Babes in Toyland Nemesisters.

Otherwise, it's Big Black dressed up like Cheap Trick and Kraftwerk on their 7" covers single.

I've probably seen better, but for some reason two pop into my head. The ltd. edition Scratch Acid "just keep eating" lp with the color changy thing. And the TAD 8-way Santa is a great cover, even though the supposed lawsuit by the people on it was just a gimmick to sell more copies.

Cows album covers.. sexy pee story, peacetika, cunning stunts, whorn ... all outstanding.

No particular order:

The Stranglers - The Raven with the 3D cover

DEVO - Duty Now original press where you could punch out the back to make it stand up

Abrasive Wheels - When The Punks... best punk rocker collage on record

Micky Jupp - Juppanese where he's pulling his eyes tight (simulating an Asian). NO ONE would use that for cover art in these PC days.

Any LP where you got a free pin (Joe Jacksons Look Sharp, John Cooper-Clarke's Snap Crackle and Bop)

The Feederz - Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss with the sandpaper glued to it. Mad props to the cd re-issue with the sandpaper on the jewel case.

The Mentors - Up The Dose & You Axed For It where thier "sexy" model is some fat bar whore they picked up

The Clash, "London Calling"

Why?

The colors and placement of the words on this cover are the same as Elvis Presely's first record.
On the Presely cover, he's holding his guitar. On the other hand, Joe is symbolically and artfully smashing his into the stage. Move over, Elvis...nuff said.

Just a minor correction. It's Paul Simonon thrashing his bass.

The original cover to Carcass' "Reek of Putrifaction" LP was classic. A collage of guts and body parts. I hate all that grind-core shit but Pat Dwyer sold me that lp on the artwork alone. Then a few years later I sold it to some St Paul metal dude for $35.

Sounds like you sold it to Earl Root.. he'd pay $35 for it.. It was a classic cover, no doubt.

I loved the Herb Alpert album cover that was taken from.... for some reason, as a small child I used to really enjoy looking at it.

I always liked album covers that were sorta textural ... like the fake black corrugated metal look of Talking Heads "Fear of Music" Or the super thick gray felt on the Joy Division "Still" lp..

The Scratch Acid "Just keep eating" cover was good..

I can't remembet the name of the band, but someone made a record with a sandpaper cover, just so it'd fuck up your other records.

On a slightly related note, I've always loved the cover of Costello's "Get Happy", with the wear marks on the jacket.

Feederz "Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss?" - the CD version even has the sandpaper...

I thought that was a great idea until I found out one of the DaDa-ists had put sandpaper on the cover of one of their books back in the 20's or 30's (I don't know who, or any dates because I never took any art history classes)

And now for soemthing completely different:

Call me an idiot...

but I was just playing Sticky Fingers by the Stones, with the original zipper cover. After 10+ years of owning that lp I finally noticed the bulge in the pants. I guess I was too preoccupied with the fact that there was a working zipper to pay any more attention to the sleeve.

In Combo , Suburbs
weren't the sleeve pictures taken inside the Longhorn?
or am I remembering something different?
anyway, I did like the back cover with them standing still and their heads all blurry.

Locally, the North Equator Nine LP is a close runnerup to Big Black's Headache in the disgusting cover art sweepstakes. A small thumbnail can be seen here: http://www.terryeason.com/discography.html

Apparently it was a picture somebody took in India of a guy holding a brick in his hand and covered in gore. The guy would pound his head with the brick and make people pay money for him to stop. Or that's how I remember the story being told to me 2nd hand.

Beki Bondage from Vice Squad put out a 12" disco club mix single under the name "Beki" called "don't turn away." The music was not good but she looked really cool on the cover. That was pretty much what I was hoping I would look like when I grew up :-)

I've got that record, plus another 12" she did. Man do they suck!

And Beki was way cuter when she was chubby.
