This is from a bootleg reprint someone did a few years ago. This amusing mid-80s zine was published by a guy named Paul Hamerlinck from St. Cloud.

Paul was a really good friend of mine for a bunch of years. He got married to a woman named Anne (they met through a Ramones fan club, years before there was email and Internet). They moved to Chicago, last I talked to him, which was about 1992ish.IP: Logged |

Paul writes about comics for Alter Ego, A pretty cool magazine about older comics and artists. I think he did a Fawcett Collectors of America zine too.(Ghoulian would just correct my sypnosis of Fawcett,so I'll just let him explain it.)IP: Logged |

No, I wouldn't smitty! Well, not unless you made a lot of egregious errors... But since you asked: Fawcett began publishing comic books in 1940 with Whiz Comics, featuring what would be their best-known character, Captain Marvel. The young Billy Batson (no, not our Billy Batson) was transformed into the crimson-clad Captain Marvel whenever he spoke the magic word "Shazam!" As time went on, Fawcett introduced spin-off characters like Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel, as well as other super-heroes such as Bulletman, Spy Smasher, and radio idol Captain Midnight. Fawcett produced other comics as well, ranging from romance to funny animal to westerns. In 1951, DC Publications sued Fawcett, claiming that Captain Marvel was a copyright infringement on Superman. The lawsuit was absurd, but the case dragged on until Fawcett decided to discontinue publishing comics completely in 1953. Ironically, 20 years later Captain Marvel was revived by... DC Publications. The funniest thing I ever saw that Paul did was his cartoon fro Grant Hart Underoos. Anyone got a copy of that? I think it was printed in MRR.The worst thing he ever did was that comp tape of St Cloud bands from about 1986. IP: Logged |
