The new punk zine for the Twin Cities looks great but will it survive in a city that doesn't financially support non-profit punk zines? ATOMIC has got great potential but such local zines just don't have the weight in the TC area as zine hotspots such as San Fran, LA and other Cali. places. What do you all think? What can we do to keep this zine going and growing?IP: Logged |

I think that this should be in "now" section. I think that I've never heard of this "zine" and that it is your "zine" and you are trying to create some sort of "publicity" and "interest" in said "zine" by asking these spurious questions. That's what I think.IP: Logged |

Are you insane? You have to know Profane Existence was/is from here. I contributed only marginally in comparison to some of the others but I think I can safely say as a collective they enjoyed a great deal of local support in many forms, not the least of was volunteerism, and in return they really helped to put Minneapolis on the map in the late 80s early 90s.(I know, Then: section people you may object, and yes, I had both Husker Du and Replacements albums whilst living in Germany mid-80s. In 90 or so, maybe 91, a trainhopping gutterpunk who knew I was a zinester gave me one of the very first issues of Profane. I was intrigued by what this city had going on. PE was responsible for much of my interest in Minneapolis early on and ultimately had A LOT to do with me moving here.) Profane was not profit motivated by any stretch. It's true that the hard work and dedication of the collective members, many of whom worked well over 40 hours a week for just subsistence and made great personal sacrifices, had much to do with its viability. As far as their reach, it was completely international and I think they may have had, at one time, a larger press run than good old MRR. So not all of the operations finances came from this local area. But I don't know how you can say with a straight face that the Twin Cities lack a support base for the DIY scene (okay Felix's remarks in the Now: bands may tell a little different story when it comes to recent show turnouts) but try doing a zine or promoting shows in somewhere like New Orleans and then you'll understand how good we have it! ------------------ C40 C40 C40 GO

I guess I haven't seen this zine either, but I'll look for it. If it has well written and engaging articles about topics that people find intersing, good layouts, and an informed and dedicated staff who are passionate about their subject matter a fanzine would "succeed" anywhere. Mangelslakt is another good local zine that has international distribution. Manifesting some of the best in zinedom because it's editors are very up on what they are writing about, somewhat specialized and therefore focused and quality consciouss. I'm sure it's non profit since they gave me a few hundred to send out in my orders for free. Profance Existence was indeed, one of the pre eminent punk zines for over ten years. I saw copies everywhere I went in Europe and Asia. IP: Logged |
