In the 9th grade computer class I teach, I let the kids bring CDs in and I'll play them on my computer for the class. So the list is from stuff the kids have brought in for me to play. Except Slayer, that one a kid asked me if I'd play it and I said "sure, why not". My only rule is that there is no swearing in the lyrics. I of course don't care, but I don't want to lose my job over it if I parent gets wind of it. So anyway, this is all stuff I have been subjected to. I don't know how to describe System of a Down other than that they seem to be really popular for a band that as far as I know gets no airplay or MTV exposure. The music is heavy-metal, thrash, Rage Against the Machine-type stuff with lyrics and singing that leads me to believe that they take themselves way too seriously. Emo-metal? www.systemofadown.com [This message has been edited by Swillmongrel (edited 03-26-2002).] IP: Logged |

REALLY popular. And although it is true they developed their fanbase on their own, MTV and Active Rock radio stations moved in quickly and have been playing them for a while. Linkin Park are MTV staples. Their interminable album, Hybrid Theory. has sold 7 million copies and been on the billboard charts for 79 weeks. These bands occupy very similar musical territory. This sub-genre, while not as unlistenable as the 'cookie-monster', nu-metal stylings of, say, Drowning Pool or Saliva, represents the worst possible melding of emo and crunch. The kids would say I just don't get it. It get it, it just sucks.

I've heard that they're supposed to be "anti-American", so maybe there's some credibilty, who knows? What I wanna know is, has Swill tried to "corrupt" their young minds with HIS music yet? You could be the first teacher in the U.S. to expose school students to the entirety of the "Funhouse" boxed-set!! IP: Logged |

VH-1 just ran an hourlong documentary on the rise of Orange County "punk", surfer fashion, and extreme sports. It was pretty fucking repulsive. They had a bunch of surfer dudes from one of those awful post-Offspring bands talking about how "Orange County sets the tone for the entire country!" and "Orange County is where everything is happening!" Like, um, lots of Mountain Dew commercials.BARF. They did interview a couple of guys from T.S.O.L. and they were pretty funny. One of them was talking about trying to break into Disneyland to decapitate Mickey Mouse. There was also some really scary footage of endless suburbs, and the mayor of Irvine talking about why conformity is a good thing. And a grainy film of Social Distortion as teenagers wearing tons of eyeliner... which looked a lot better than Mike Ness' current California greaser look. Granted I was never a fan of Social Distortion. [This message has been edited by dadaduck (edited 03-27-2002).] IP: Logged |

I thought that I read that System..blah blah are all of "middle-eastern" descent. I did see one of their videos by mistake once, they seemed to be very cheesed off about something, although the imagery and lyrics were confusing/unintelligible. The extremely hairy singer was jumping around and yelling about something. Maybe we don't get it, Mr. Mom.IP: Logged |

Actually he just comes off that way. He's a really nice guy and at one time was a pretty OK friend of mine- he was really tight with the vocalist from my band back in 83-84ish. All you get to see is what the media wants you to see- little clips here and there of dramatic shit he says or whatever. He's a stand up guy and to my recollection he never turns his back on a friend. Just because he's in the limelight people take potshots at him from afar, but I would actually love to see you stand right up close and tell him that. I know him well enough to know what the result would be. He's got a big heart, that guy- never ever backs down, ever.

YOU TELL 'EM, TOBY! I, too, agree that Mr. Ness is a stnd up kind of guy. I met him when I won this silly contest from Sony and Northern Lights on Hennepin. We were given "all access" to the "backstage" for the show at the Ave and the crew were really cool and set up some stacks for us to sit on at the side of the stage. They also did a little "formal" meet and greet afterwards. Mike and Dennis were REALLY nice, answered all kinds of stupid, fanatical kid questions and signed a ton of autographs (and there were only 2 of us). 10/11 years later, I can still picture him stepping next to us between the set and the encore to say "hi" and towel off (YUMMY). If someone is cool enough to take the time to humor a couple of kids who are there on behalf of the FICKIN RECORD LABEL, they can't be too bad. Plus, I heard from one of the former employees that Mike and Dennis actually looked at all of the entries (it was supposed to be a blind ballot) and picked mine...naughty boys, fixin the contest to get a girl (as opposed to a boy) backstage. I stand corrected. The way they edited his clips in the documentary made him sound kinda dumb.

I stand corrected. I never watch MTV and I never listen to the radio except for talk radio, so I was just guessing about System of a Down. My only exposure to pop music is from when kids bring it into my class or I hear it in the supermarket or if it is used in a TV ad or on a TV show. I am blissfully ignorant, more than happy to listen to the same Alice Cooper record over and over again every day.

The song you are refering to is probably "Chop Suey." They're Croation and I have to say that I really like them. Seem to have a good sense of humor and the singer kinda reminds me of Dan Jonestown. Good early-90's sounding punk/metal. Would have been a good fit in MPLS back then. quote: Originally posted by zomzom: I thought that I read that System..blah blah are all of "middle-eastern" descent. complete agreement. I like my music to say "I don't fit in. What's wrong with these idiots?", not "I don't fit in. What's wrong with me?" Misery rock sucks. I do appreciate this forum, though. Information is power, and I can't stomach listening to most of the "kids" stuff nowadays. Heck, looking back 5 - 10 years to when I was one of those "kids" listening to that inane grunge crap, how did I stand it? IP: Logged |

Well, this isn't completely on-topic, so I'll have to watch out for those TCPolice.Anyways, my friend went up to Northfield to visit a kid he used to live next door to. The guys friend said there was a "core" show, and it was like Slipknot - crappy death metal who care WAY too much about their image and how cool and "anti-social" they are. (I'm not sure, someone feel free to correct me). Anyways, 1. they are (kind of) tainting the good name of hardcore and 2. teens in MN don't all like good music... especially in small towns. I had MTV on the other day and I noticed a preponderance of bands who wear "scary" masks or facepaint, like Mudvayne, Slipknot and this other band that tries to look just like slipknot but I can't remember their name. VERY disturbing, folks. We must ask ourselves: Are they too ugly to show their faces? Or too pretty to be playing "new metal"?

Gosh, and I thought no one remembered. However, that assertion is incorrect. While I love themes of alienation (see Numan, Barrett, Pink Floyd, Husker Du, etc.) I can't abide a 'crunch-for-crunch's-sake' approach to music. If you're just angry and don't have any comprehension of melody, or something interesteng, I'm not into it. Hell, even Marylin Manson gets a certain number of style points. This flood of eyebrow ring, funny little beard types is pap. Misery is the new pop. If that makes me old and out of touch, so be it. Happens to everybody. IP: Logged |

Today on the CD player in the 9th grade computer lab:Pennywise (I don't mind them so much, kind of generic but I've heard much worse. The kids were talking about an album they had called "Land of the Free", I told them a punk band 20 years ago used that title for a single. They had never heard of Husker Du of course) Jethro Tull Sepultura IP: Logged |

I've got some kids who are getting a bit into old 80's hardcore. I saw one wearing a Minor Threat shirt the other day so I started talking to him. It's his favorite band to listen to, so I told him about how I saw them play and his face turned red and he sat and stared at me like I was the reincarnation of Jesus or something. It was pretty cute. I printed out the old flyer and gave him a copy.A few kids here are into Tiger Army. Weezer is incredibly popular, too. I usually see at least two to three Weezer shirts a day (and I only have 375 kids in high school). IP: Logged |

I've listened to SOAD on quite a few occasions, my roommates like them, and some of their stuff is okay. They try to do some interesting stuff with their music, but aren't really all that good at it, but at least it's more interesting than a lot of the other crap (creed, lincoln park, mudvayne, slipnot, nickleback, etc...). They are a little preachy though and seem to try to confirm their 'underground' hipness too much. The story goes: the singer's parents are Armenian but he was born in Beruit, moved to LA when he was 8 and lived among the Armenian population there.
