I actually asked Ric Ocasek this same question when I interviewed him a few years back and his answer was the same as David Byrne's (Talking Heads), "you don't go back and date your high school sweetheart." But if they were to get back together for a tour, there would have to be a no-post-1982 rule for songs. Incidentally, he has the skinniest head and the most delicate hands ever. He is Ichabod Crane (sp?). IP: Logged |

Sorry Zom, But noone has posted on them since 2000. I suppose I could have done a search though. I had no idea about Ben Orr, but it wasn't like it was Ric Ocasek. If it was him who was dead then I could see your point. Anyway I'm glad to see you're back. I will try to be a more serious TC Punk from now on. IP: Logged |

Well, I love me the Cars, and I'll agree to an extent about Ric being maybe a bit more important to the band, but Ben Orr sang a lot of the tunes as well, had a big input into the sound of the band. I saw them in '81, I'd probably go if they did a reunion, which seems unlikely though.IP: Logged |

Now that I think about it, the keyboard was a big part of their sound like a lot of other bands from that time.IP: Logged |

I was born in '78, so the Cars had no impact on my teenage years. I remember in the late 80's though they were played heavily on KQ92 and billed as "classic rock". I liked their songs that I heard on the radio because of the weird synth sounds. Never heard a whole Cars album, no one I know owns one. I like "Just What I Needed" and "Shake It Up". When I went through my hard rock & grunge/punk phase I totally disregarded this music. Had no relevance in my musical spectrum. But within the last 2 years I hear their songs on the radio and I find myself blasting them, singing along, esp "Shake It Up". I think I'll go pick up one of their records today. I know Shake It Up is post-70's, are any of the other songs on that record that good?IP: Logged |

Most of the other songs are cool. Shake it Up came out in '81, you'd be best off finding the double CD Cars greatest hits collection if you can find it. I've seen several copies used. It's got some cool b-sides as well. I've stated before that I really like the Cars in spite of what some people think. They were truly one of the starting points for the typical "rock" music fan to get into New Wave and then into real punk.IP: Logged |

I pledge allegiance to no musical style. I was trying to say my horizons have expanded beyond that Alice In Chains/Seattle sludge shit that made many a headbanger throw away their Poison and Cinderella records. Now I can apreciate genius songwriting in all genres, and the Cars included.[This message has been edited by joeschmoe (edited 08-06-2002).] IP: Logged |

Own all their albums. Heartbeat City is one big suckfest! Panorama generated no hits, but is a very interesting album nonetheless. This was the only band I 'slept out' for to get tickets. Sat on a chaise lawn chair at a Great American Music to score 4th row tickets when the played with Wang Chung opening in 85. Dude, that's soooo '80's. Wavo Head out!

They are really getting overplayed on the Triple Rock jukebox by college kids. The novelty has worn thin.IP: Logged |

Anything that gets overplayed by "college kids" turns to an annoyance. I don't go to that bar, too many kiddies. It's not Ric Ocasek and his big ears' fault that they're wildly popular still...IP: Logged |

I thought they were overrated, and caught hell for voicing my opinion on several occasions. I was re-converted this weekend, however, and now retract anything negative or derogatory I've ever muttered about the Cars.

Are you addressing moi? Well, my conversion ocurred in a drunken stupor early Sat. (yeah, post POS show) morning when someone put on a "Best of" record. I must have been in the right state of mind to accept them back into my life.
