I like Frank. Just read a book about the early days of the Mothers of Invention. Frank did some very brilliant music. Yup, I digs me some Zappa now and again. IP: Logged |

i looove the heck out of frank zappa. He was such a cocky ass sometimes and he was so rude to sell out rock types(a reference to we're only in it for the money). FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!! my favorite song is "charva"and i also dig the whole bit that he was actually a GREAT musician and composer!IP: Logged |

Absolutely brilliant composer, lyricist, etc."Bobby Brown Goes Down" can still illicit chortles of laughter when I think about it. "I can take about an hour on the tower of power/as long as I gets a little golden shower." IP: Logged |

While I respect some of what the guy has done, I don't care much for the poo-poo and pee-pee sort of lyrics, the noodly long guitar solos, and calculated "weirdness". I like some of the very early stuff, and I think "concept" albums like Cruisin' with Ruben and the Jets were pretty brilliant. Can't stand listening to most of that stuff though.IP: Logged |

That's true!! The '80s era stuff just has to go with the keyboard/synclavier (sic) solos.IP: Logged |

I have a theory that anyone who is really into music and not just genres will go thru a Zappa phase. It may last a week, it may last a lifetime. I was into Zappa in 9th and 10th grades. Titties and Beer being my fave (from Live In NYC).Anything after and including Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch is utter crap. IP: Logged |

When I was about seven years old, Frank Zappa scared the living shit out of me. He was on Saturday Night Live, singing " I am the slime from your video...." and he freaked me out so badly I had to run in the other room and hide until I was positive he was gone. My unnatural fear of Zappa lasted about a week, after which I had talked myself down and decided he was funny. ( Who... could imagine... that they would freak out.... in Coloma Wisconsin....) I love Zappa. I seem to be one of the few women who does. Yeah, he made some utter crapola, but he also did some amazing, revolutionary stuff. " Bobby Brown " cracks me up too. (with a spindle up my butt 'til it makes me scream...)IP: Logged |

It's cool to hear that I'm not the only Zappa fan amongst the TCPUNK crowd. If I'm in a certain frame of mind I'll listen to Frank a lot, but mostly take him in small doses. I admire(d) his mind more than his music.IP: Logged |

I also like the early Mothers of Invention, especially Freak Out, the 1st album. And "Why Doncha Do Me Right?" is a really cool song. For years it was available only on a rare Mothers single but now it's included with the Absolutely Free CD.Frank's attitude towards his audience (i.e. "You musical ignoramuses can't possibly appreciate the genius of what I'm doing") became really tiresome after a while. Trivia note: Frank wrote and arranged "Boy Wonder, I Love You," Burt (Robin) Ward's cash-in single during the Batman craze in 1966. IP: Logged |

Famous Fans Pick Zappa Faves The late Frank Zappa is revered as an absurdist genius that continually pushed the limits of conventional music, but wading into his vast body of work can be daunting for new listeners. With that in mind, Rykodisc has initiated a new compilation series, "Zappa Picks," where celebrity fans of the artist's work handpick favorite tracks from his catalog. The first two single-disc sets in the series were compiled by Phish drummer Jon Fishman and Primus guitarist Larry LaLonde, and are due Oct. 15 from the label. Each takes a different approach to Zappa's output and the 16- and 19-song collections share just two tracks -- "Dog Breath," from 1972's "Just Another Band From L.A.," and "Sofa No. 2" from 1975's "One Size Fits All." "It is safe to say that the work of Frank Zappa, his music primarily, but also his humor, politics, social commentary... all of it... has not just been a fundamental influence on me, but is actually more like part of my metabolism," Fishman said in a statement. "I find this music so wonderful that no matter what I'm listening to, or just finding out about, Frank's music is always on my personal play list, and I never get tired of it. How could you?" added LaLonde. Here is the "Zappa Picks -- By Jon Fishman of Phish" track listing: "Excentrifugal Forz," from "Apostrophe" (1974) "Apostrophe," from "Apostrophe" "Magdalena," from "Just Another Band From L.A." (1972) "Dog Breath," from "Just Another Band From L.A." "Cheepnis," from "Roxy & Elsewhere" (1974) "Son of Orange County," from "Roxy & Elsewhere" "More Trouble Every Day," from "Roxy & Elsewhere" "It Can't Happen Here," from "Freak Out!" (1966) "Keep it Greasey," from "Joe's Garage" (1979) "For Calvin (And His Next Two Hitch-Hikers)," from "The Grand Wazoo" (1973) "What Ever Happened to All the Fun In the World," from "Sheik Yerbouti" (1979) "Rat Tomago," from "Sheik Yerbouti" "Wait a Minute," from" Sheik Yerbouti" "It Just Might Be a One-Shot Deal," from "Waka/Jawaka" (1972) "I'm the Slime," from "Over-Nite Sensation" (1973) "Sofa No. 2," from "One Size Fits All" (1975) Here is the "Zappa Picks -- By Larry LaLonde of Primus" track listing: "five-five-FIVE," from "Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar" (1981) "Dumb All Over," from "You Are What You Is" (1981) "Alien Orifice," from "Make a Jazz Noise Here" (1991) "Camarillo Brillo," from "Over-Nite Sensation" (1973) "Evelyn, a Modified Dog," from "One Size Fits All" (1975) "Wild Love," from "Sheik Yerbouti" (1979) "G-Spot Tornado," from "Jazz From Hell" (1986) "Dog Breath," from "Just Another Band From L.A." (1972) "Little Umbrellas," from "Hot Rats" (1969) "Fine Girl," from "Tinsel Town Rebellion" (1981) "Sofa No. 2," from "One Size Fits All" "Village of the Sun," from "Roxy & Elsewhere" (1974) "Echidna's Arf (Of You)," from "Roxy & Elsewhere" "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," from "Zoot Allures" (1976) "St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast," from "Apostrophe" (1974) "Black Page #2," from "Zappa in New York" (1978) "Fembot in a Wet T-Shirt," from "Joe's Garage" (1979) "On the Bus," from "Joe's Garage" "Doreen," from "You Are What You Is" IP: Logged |

When Frank was little his father would bring home some mercury for Frank to play with (Frank's dad worked in a factory that made thermometers I guess). When you drop it on the carpet its gone. Frank said his carpet in his bedroom was bright silver with the shit!STRANGE! The Big O IP: Logged |

I guess I am not into music. Most of what I have heard seems over complicated and calculated. Math rock just ain't my thing. IP: Logged |

The only time I saw Zappa was in 82 in Austin, TX. It was also the one of the first times I ever did mushrooms, so I have little to report. I've gotta buddy who used to play with some of those guys, however, and there are some mp3's at the Ranch of them goofin around in 1976. http://spreadeagleranch.com/mp3.htm MugSPAM IP: Logged |
