Who is this Tom Petty clown and what's he doing with a band called the Heartbreakers! Flush that FM radio stuff and bring on the LAMF LP by Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. Pirate Love, Born to Lose, Chinese Rocks, these guys fucking rule. Totally blazing raw rocking punk. I like this ten times more than the Sex Pistols or the NY Dolls. Too bad these dudes were so fucked up on drugs. Otherwise Thunders would be canonized like Chuck Berry or that other dude who was on TV with the other similarly named band as a great guitarist and songwriter. Brilliant songs, rocked hard, and totally cool. Often imitated, never equaled. The original NYC Heartbreakers!IP: Logged |

Who, Buck Cherry? I went thru my Thuders-worship phase a few years ago and came to a realization: Everyone Thunders was involved with totally carried the guy. The Dolls were fucking great, but solo Johansen and Sylvain far outshine Thunders solo stuff. DOn't believe me? Go listen to the live Johansen record from '78 and tell me that dosen't blow the roof off of Johnny T's solo stuff. Still don't believe me? Check out The Waldos, Walter Lure's solo gig from the late 80's/early 90's. Proof that it was actually Walter Lure who was the soul of the Heartbreakers and NOT Mr. Genzale. IP: Logged |

Right now, I'm on a diet of almost nothing but Johnny Thunders exclusively. Its cool straightedgers can enjoy this as much as I do, but I like the fact that Thunders was always fucked up. He stayed true to the "Sex, Drugs & Rock n' Roll" motto. The slow songs are just as good as the rockers. "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" (I have a version of this by Ronnie Spector & Joey Ramone also), "Sad Vacation", "Eve of Seduction", his version of "Play With Fire". Love it all.IP: Logged |

well, maybe, I think if he wasn't such a drug addict his talent would probably have come to the fore a little more. The heartbreakers were awesome, whichever parts were "holding it up" But the main point I was trying to make is, they are far superior to this tom petty and the heartbreakers goofus. IP: Logged |

I have always had a deep love for the pin cushion myself. I prefer "Live at Max's Kansas City," to "LAMF." and Ollie, have you ever fucking listened to "So Alone???" wtf? That album saved my lifeIP: Logged |

Thunders is one of my all time favorites nobody can play a solo like him. To bad he was such a fuck up. He could of been a contender. He was born to lose. "thats the way it goes" "the city its so cold"[This message has been edited by gilligan (edited 10-11-2002).] IP: Logged |

Yes, I owned "So Alone" for many years. But after realizing that I only listened to "Memory" I sold my copy for $40 and taped the one song. On the positive side I have a few bootlegs left. One double cd is called "Add Water and Stir" which is some of Thunders' last performances. One electric set and one acoustic set from Tokyo. I've also got a cdr by Alison Gordy, Thunders' back-up singer for the last few years he was around. Pretty cool white-girl jazz. And FELIX: You are correct in saying that the Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers kicks Tom Petty's Hearbreakers in the face! IP: Logged |

Did you ever hear about the time Terry Katzman had the responsibility of taking care of JT after a Gang War gig(1981)? They were going down Hennipen Ave. after 1 in the AM and Johnny is walking up to all these black dudes and asking really loudly, "Hey nigger, got any smack?" Of course this put Terry into quite a tizzy as he dragged Mr. Thunders down the sidewalk trying to get his junkie ass out of there. I met JT a few months before he died backstage at the Ritz in NYC and he was pale as a ghost. He went on stage and was really bad becuase of the state he was in but then after a lot of people left he started to sober up on stage and really rocked. It didn't hurt that he had Clem Burke on drums. They did "Wipe Out" and then went into "Pipeline" right after. It was rad.

You guys crack me up. I never said that Tom Petty rocked and Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers didn't.I love both Heartbreakers bands! I guess my taste is a little more diverse. I agree with Ollie, Johnny wasn't as good on his own. IP: Logged |

And then there's Hartman's Heartbreakers (an obscure country act from the 30s) and a latinidad band simply called Heartbreakers.IP: Logged |

Thunders really was a great rock dude. I can not agree that he was carried by fellow members of bands and those other folks did not do well without him. Period. The Dolls was THUNDERS band. He let the others join. The Stones Heartbreaker is pretty rockin too.IP: Logged |

Yeah, but have you heard that Actress rehearsal tape? They SUCKED before Johansen and Sylvain joined up. IP: Logged |

They sucked no more than any other young band. Really, It was a great help to add That jagger looking guy. Slyvain really did not add much, Does he play any dolls songs, Trash, he didn't write any or at least that is my impression when the only guy alive won't play any songs. I have the idea it is out of respect or somthing though. The dolls are one of my all time favorites.IP: Logged |

Don't get me wrong, I love the Dolls. I'm just tired of the Cult Of Johnny Thunders worshiping a dead junkie that could barely play guitar. The Dolls were a unit who's sum was much greater than its parts. I just happen to think that the stuff David Johansen did after the Dolls and before the whole Buster Poindexter thing was SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than what Thunders did.As far as the Hearbreakers are concerned it was pretty much a 50/50 split between Thunders and Lure. After they split as a band Thunders' stuff just kinda spiraled downward into the "feel sorry for me 'cause I'm a fuck-up" trip. Lure actually made something of his life and played music as a hobby, but his stuff still kicked ass. Track down The Waldos "Rent Party" cd on Sympathy if you need more proof. Fucking great album. Easy, get a 62 Les Paul custom and run it thru a marshall.Yeah, in his younger days Thunders was quite compitant on the six strings, but heroine is not a good choice for a muse. Face it, you're not gonna get me to agree with you and I'm not gonna get you to agree with me for a few years, once the novelty and hipness of Johnny Thunders wears off. Been there, done that, moved on. I've got the "LAMF" tattoo to prove it. IP: Logged |
