Alright, so I'm the joker who had the "Why MPLS" topic but now I want to change gears. We just visited Milwaukee and I have to say, IT WAS AWESOME! Totally an oddball place with tons of arty farts and WACKY bars. Add Lake Michigan to the mix and this is one groovy ass place. Plus they didn't tear down all their old buildings in downtown like a certain other city did in the 1960's. So waddya y'all think of Milwaukee?[This message has been edited by owen (edited 06-23-2002).] IP: Logged |

I've been to Milwaukee several times over the last year or so, and I think it has to be one of the most gorgeous cities out there. It seems like there's a variety of places of entertainment as well, but for some reason I get the impression that everything except the bars close really early there. I could be mistaken, though. If it wasn't in Wisconsin, I could almost consider living there. It's like living in a Chicago suburb without the Chicago expense. IP: Logged |

i grew up in milwaukee. i try to avoid it now, except to visit my parents once in awhile. i guess it's not a horrible place, except that it's one of the most segregated cities in the country.

Well, as a member of the press, I can vouch for the fact that we NEVER (cough) get anything wrong. Smart ass comments aside, 3 things: 1) In my opinion, the whole country is segregated and racist. 2) There is nothing worse than a bunch of self-congragualtory-honky-ass liberals talking about racism. 3) If you're going to make a statement like that, it stands on it's own better if you can back it up.With all that said, man is Milwaukee a bootyfull place. Must...move...there. [This message has been edited by owen (edited 06-24-2002).] IP: Logged |

3) If you're going to make a statement like that, it stands on it's own better if you can back it up.here's one: http://detnews.com/specialreports/2002/segregation/b03-390169.htm "Geography and history: Most of the nation's most segregated regions are clustered in the industrial Northeast and Midwest. The nation's six most segregated metro areas in a Detroit News analysis of 2000 census data all sit on the Great Lakes: Detroit; Gary, Ind.; Milwaukee; Chicago; Cleveland; and Buffalo. " at least we beat out detroit and gary, two of the worst places i've ever been to in my life. IP: Logged |

Great stuff nunsoup. Gimme a little time to process this but you seem to back up your point pretty strongly. But one point that the article mentions that needs to be addresed is that the most non-segregated cities are the ones with the least amount of minorities. Talk about a copout. It's like saying "we have 3 minorities living here in Spring Lake Park, so we're segregated." [This message has been edited by owen (edited 06-25-2002).] IP: Logged |

In addition to being a journalist, you must also be a generalist given the number of generalizations you make. Do....move...there!

Patti, you ALWAYS say I generalize! Can opinions be considered generalizations? I really do think the entire nation is racist, even if subliminally so. Plus, you gotta admit that having a conversation with a bunch of white people about racism, besides being totally boring, is like talking to rich people about the problems of poverty. I guess my main point was that the Milwaukee I saw did not deserve the bad rap it gets nationally. And yes, I did see the bad neighborhoods.IP: Logged |

I'm with nunsoup on this one. (we went to the same high school ..... 10 years apart)I grew up there and have some fond memories but can't help but feel like the place is a dying industrial nightmare. When I was in high school there were at 4 record stores of what i would consider "Minneapolis Quality", for years there has been none (don't get me going on Atomic, the place sucks now) and now has one good store (Earwax). I always look around for shows when home and never really see much. It seems like all-ages shows, especially house shows have dwindled to almost nothing. I'd hate to be a kid there now getting into punk or indy rock...I mean how much can you hang out at FUEL. That said, I enjoy much of the touristy stuff: the Zoo is still one of the best in the world, the Milwauke Public Museum (the field history museum) is also outstanding (diarama-rama!) and the rotatating ethinc-fests on the summerfest grounds are great (avoid Summerfest though...at all costs) The Lake is beautiful, but I wouldn't go in it if you paid me. i am kinda psyched that it looks like that Bayview neighborhood on the southside is coming up cause the East Side is more played out than Uptown. Yes , they did keep a lot of there old buildings, but we will see how long that lasts, the old Pabst Brewry is huge and in the way, plus they tore down a lot of shit to make the new basketball center. Nice place to visit, wouldnt wanna live there. -jason

I spent some early fomative years in Millwaukee and I'm still kinda fond of the place...and y'know, their beer is still better than anything in Minneapolis(Sprecher and Lakefront destroy Summit and James Page, in my less than humble opinion...)!!! Music wise, Die Kreuzen were totally the shit(even the later stuff-I'll take "October File" over "Warehouse" in a heartbeat), and Couch Flambeau, Plasticland and the Frogs also out class any MPLS. bands of the era...AND...alot of you aren't gonna like this, but the Violent Femmes have held the test of time much better than Mr. Westerberg and his ramshackle "mats". Apples n' Oranges maybe, but if ya think on it for a wee bit, you will realize....IP: Logged |

Yes, on Sprecher's!! Too bad all we can get here is their root beer--which I like anyway. I love the rootbeer's Hekyll/Jekyll take off on their eagle? logo! IP: Logged |

hey yall. Milwaukee rules. We just got back from our extensive world tour which ended in Mili wah kay (the good land). It was a hell of a lot better than most local shows I have been to. People didn't just sit around drinking they danced and appreciated the music. We played this tiny ass basement which was a free show but I have no complaints. For some reason we played last (what the hell?). It was wicked hot in that basement and water was all over the floor (rumor has it a toilet over flowed). Our guitars went heavily out of tune after the first song but it definitly ripped. The people there were so polite and hospitable. Everyone was singing along with our covers. It ruled. Seriously that show is why people form bands. PBR me ASAP.IP: Logged |

I can't believe there are people actually saying that Milwaukee is beautiful. As for what all of you are saying, I think it's all true... good and bad - lots of transition.I grew up here, moved to Minneapolis for 6 years, and have been back in Milwaukee for 2. There's a distinct difference in the cities, and I think that Milwaukee has changed a *ton* since I last lived here. A friend from Mpls. that came to visit last fall commented about the number of new bars and clubs and the energy - and the fact that Mpls seemed to be losing that. I think everyone got bored, and decided to do something about it. There's some kids who put out a small club/cultural guide called info* and their passion about the city and wanting people to get out and *do stuff* is inspiring. There's an energy here now that I felt 8 years ago in Mpls. Unfortunately, a lot of the growth has been a lot of gentrification, but that will happen. Bay View and Walkers Point are probably next on the list, although the explosive growth of the past few years has been centered around the East Side and Downtown - and there's only so many rich people who can afford the fancy new condos so I'm not sure south of the city will get ruined. I hope not. There's a place for both. (the south side is the "nordeast" of Milwaukee) I love some of the East Side bars - but love the south side ones more. Sorry to babble - I just think it's incredible that people are raving about a place that when I lived in Minneapolis was "just a place you pass through on the way to Chicago" It's taken me a little while to get over my own memories of it being a dull stinky city. As for Oshkosh - it's a lovely area... Lots of great old buildings but I haven't been there in a while. IP: Logged |
