Ugh, I go to sleep at 4:OO drunk of my gourd and wake up at 11:00 after a telephone call only to return to my computer. I am a dork.

Just curious to know what you mean by typing with a shovel. Am I digging my own grave? Or are you refering to my drinking habits?

I didn't see anything contradicting about my very first post on the subject. I don't like how everyone on this board likes to argue and drop criticism on me. It was a generalized comment of things that do happen in that area of Minneapolis, or any city with an ounce of urban decay. Why is that offensive? All the blacks, latinos, and asians I know would agree with me. I like that scene in the Malcolm X movie where the nieve hippie college girl runs up to Malcolm and asks what she can do for the "negro situation". He looks at her with a stern face and says "Nothing". I don't need some dork who's taking her first semester of socialogy at Hamline to start criticizing me for my racist comments while she's probably sitting in her dorm room listening to Lisa Loeb and I'm out at the Red Sea with my freestyle crew.

Yes, I can be an asshole and that was a generalization.

I guess the best thing to do is to avoid the whole racism topic online because there is too much to say about it, and no matter how hard I try, I feel I cannot effectively express myself. My point of view doesn't seem to come across.

I type this much because I took typing classes in high school and it's easy to rattle this off in 2 minutes. Yes I am irritating. Editing is not my forte.

first of all, your attempts to label me as a naive, wide-eyed college boy is nothing short of pathetic. you don't know me, joe. for someone who rails on and on about how no one should assume anything about you (reread the first ave thread if you don't catch my drift). what makes you think i haven't spent any time in the city? i ride my bike through phillips every day and i've never had any problems whatsoever. that's one example, i could share many more. other people have said what i think, so i won't repeat. however i will say that disregarding my statements because i have a little more education than you merely flaunts your narrow-mindedness. maybe some of the education you have such a distaste for would do you some good.

1.) For some reason I was thinking you were a girl. Does that make me sexist? I also had no idea that you were a self-admitted college dork until I read the "Punk Radio Show" thread today. I guess I half-way called the shot on that one. Now maybe I do know who you are.

2.) I mentioned welfare, you said "Gangsta Queens". A mental picture of a woman must have popped in your head. hmm, welfare=women. I guess single dads don't count. Does that make you sexist?
Probablly not, but I'm not going to bug you about it. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

3.) I don't be havin a distaste fo edumacation, I jess don't like being axed stupid shit. I still be workin' on muh intornet skeez, ya dig?

4.) I was only comparing forest decay to urban decay. I wasn't trying to paint a comprehensive picture of a midwestern metropolis. Just trying to be creative with my writings is all. Sorry for being hotheaded.

5.) I'll bet if we bumped into each other at a bar and started yappin', without knowing we communicated on this post, we would realize that we probably agree on more issues than disagree.

ha, no one who has ever seen me would confuse me for a girl. ah, the wonders of the internet.
oh, and about the college thing, i know what you're talking about with college kids who think they can come in and take a few classes and solve the world's problems. i didn't want to be labeled as one of these people. i was just asking for clarification.

2.) I mentioned welfare, you said "Gangsta Queens". A mental picture of a woman must have popped in your head. hmm, welfare=women. I guess single dads don't count. Does that make you sexist?

right. you said "non working welfare-supported residents" and i paraphrased that as welfare queens, because it is a common term, and that's what i thought you essentially meant.

3.) I don't be havin a distaste fo edumacation, I jess don't like being axed stupid shit. I still be workin' on muh intornet skeez, ya dig?

stupid shit? if i didn't think it was was stupid, i wouldn't have said anything! i was just trying to see what you really meant, because it came off (to me, at least) as bigoted and ill-informed.

4.) I was only comparing forest decay to urban decay. I wasn't trying to paint a comprehensive picture of a midwestern metropolis. Just trying to be creative with my writings is all. Sorry for being hotheaded.

well said. i'm sorry for blowing up as well.

5.) I'll bet if we bumped into each other at a bar and started yappin', without knowing we communicated on this post, we would realize that we probably agree on more issues than disagree.

hell yeah! hope it does happen.

now, back to work. damn.

ok, here's my last word on the topic. i guess this concept of comparing 'decay' of a forest to urban decay is what really bugs me. trees in forests decay naturally, and are incredibly important to the ecosystem. many species of plants and animals depend on rotting trees for food, shelter, and in reproduction. it's a perfectly natural and beneficial situation. urban decay, however, is never good, unless you're a 'get tough on crime' conservative politician who uses half-truths and scare tactics to gain popularity. i don't think a comparison between the two concepts can ever be fair.

It was a visual metaphor, not a logical one.
Picture a rotting tree and how beneficial it is. Now picture the ugliest scene from the city you have ever experienced. Combine that with the smell of smog and the Burger King wrappers blowing in the breeze.

I think you just made the same point I was trying to make and at the same time, completely missed it.

And yes, I think that was incorrect usage of the term "metaphor", please don't call me on it.

More importantly, if the Pope shits in the woods, and then a decaying tree falls on it, does it smell?

That depends. First of all if a pope is in the woods, it probably wouldn't be in WisconSIN as there is sin in WisconSIN. Second, if a pope were to actually shit in the woods it would most definetly be holy shit. To touch this shit in an unpure manner would cause you to instantly turn into a pile of shit that smelled shitier than the shit you just fucked with. Now to more indirectly answer your original question Owen, I'm going to turn things over to Nunsoups virgin ass, since she is closer to god than i am and has the ability to ride unscathed through the valley of the shadows of darkies. I mean darkness.

I'm heading for Madison tomorrow morning. That's where I grew up, so it pretty much never occurred to me not to love Wisconsin.

I love the black-folks-targeted "Escape to Wisconsin" commercials on KMOJ. "Darnell could really use a vacation!"
