who on here is from WI? I lived in Chippewa Falls for a bit growing up and dread it, but i have friends there.
i'm sure i'll have fun, but i just can't believe i got talked into going back.

Don't worry, that feeling goes away after a decade or so. I was born in Superior. Luckilly, all the people i am related to had the good sense to move elsewhere. My Ma still lives in rural WI and it's fun to go visit her.

Relax

You'll have a good time.

I have always had a good time in 'Sconnie, tho every time I have been through it's been on tour*, so partying like like a rock star was only natural.
And what's more fun than partying like a rock star?

*Except for one trip to the Dells, where I drove go carts...and partied like a rock star!

Bars are generally open til 3 a.m., more drinking to be had in the after hours. Wisconsin IS a party state, because so much is rural.
"What should we do tonight?"
"I don't know. Get drunk."

Got into too trouble back in 1994 in Appleton, WI. Put on probation and never left. Came here from Minnepolis where I was born and raised and sometimes I get homesick so I return just too find I want out as quickley as I came. Guessing its the outrageous rent and high taxes. Once your out of Minnesota it seems like life is much easier.

Chippewa Falls can be loads of fun.
did you ever catch "Tortured Ted and the Twisted Trio"
They were oodles of fun when they played, like Alice Cooper on crack.

I grew up in a village called Stetsonville in the middle of the state. It was a good place to grow up, lots of close friends, unity. Most of my friends have since left but I go back to visit Mom and Dad a couple times a year. Chippewa Falls needs to do something about that stupid little stop light that stops hiway 29 for hours at a time.

I for one was raised right here in the heart of the city (where there ain't no love). And I must say at any available opportunity I have I get lost in the woods. It gives me spiritual grounding and inner solitude. You can't beat it, everyone needs it. The beauty of the Midwest isn't in our mini-metropolises, but in the natural surroundings which are diminishing by the second. It's kinda funny, the rural kids want to check out the city, the city kids want to get the fuck out! If I want to see decay, I want to see a rotting tree trunk full of life, rather than some crumbling gang-graffiti covered tenament with non working welfare-supported residents hurling insults at you cuz you shouldn't be in that neighborhood at that time of day. And Milwaukee depending on where you are can be a shithole just like anywhere else. You want to see a real party town? Check out Madison. Good vibe, much ganja, college kids, lots of educated party people wanting to socialize and have fun. Plus they have a thriving underground scene from what I've heard. I think the band Garbage is located there. Anyways, stay out of trouble, from what I've heard 'Sconnie cops luv to fuck with the 'Sottans. Yaa, dey really do.

I lived in Chippewa Falls for about a year and I got to attend Kindergarten with John Lienenkugel. I even went over to his house a few times. Then Control Data closed the Chippewa lab and we moved back to the metro area. Asi es la vida. My closest family lives between Janesville and Madison.

well, yes. i notice you didn't answer my question of whether or not that actually happened to you. maybe i should rephrase it and say you're throwing around negative stereotypes, and i doubt you've actually had gangster welfare queens shouting at you while you innocently stroll down the street. i've never noticed the situation you described in milwaukee or the twin cities. that's all.

Go hang out behind Chicago Lake Liquors for the night. Or better yet, walk around 25th and Stevens for awhile. If you don't get the feeling that you could possibly be in danger just cuz you're white, well, then you are naive.

Now compare this to a quiet evening around a campfire in a Wisconsin (or Minnesotan)state park.

That's the point I was trying to make.

I just remembered a good story. I was roughly somewhere around 31st and Lyndale and this little boy (race irrelevant, wouldn't want to create unfair stereotypes), was shooting a bb gun out a second story bedroom window into traffic. I only noticed because a bb bounced off my car. Only several feet from my head and my window was wide open! And I don't even consider that part of the neighborhood "the hood".

Here is a story for you, back to small town Wisconsin. A friend of ours lived in a 2 story house right off the main hiway. Directly across the street from his bedroom window was our English teachers apartment. The said individual pointed an unloaded shotgun out the window at the noted teachers window as a joke. Unfortunately for him she saw him. Found no humor in the event. She moved.

You really aren't totally safe just cuz you feel safe. Imagine being bit by a poisonous snake or shot by a hunters stray bullet, while camping in MN or WI or anywhere for that matter. My point to Nunsoup who seems to think I'm creating negative stereotypes by pointing out situations that really do happen to real people, is that sometimes the bullshit of the city makes me appreciate the solitude of the rural areas that much more.

Joe, you're absolutely right, which is why I would never go to the East Side of St. Paul, where they're all Nazis, or into any rural area, where some cracker motherfuckers will jump anyone who "look weird" and then try to fuck me in my ass.

I mean, you gotta keep it safe, right?

there is danger everywhere. i prefer minnesota because it's always felt right (like my home) and chippewa falls never did. i was refering to the feeling i get when i'm in the town. in chippewa i immediatly think "why the hell did i come back here" in minnesota i think "yay i'm home, the people i love are here"
i prefer the city because there is always something going on, while some people may dislike the city for the same reason.
i have many friends who love wisconsin, it's not a big deal.
people get hurt in the city and in the country. many people from high school have died, while i've been lucky enough to have my city friends still here and doing well.

Ya know my ex-girlfriend used to share the same naive college kid sentiments Nunsoup seems to possess, until I brought her to a check cashing place somewhere around Bloomington & Lake. She suddenly realized that I wasn't the racist one.

Yep, lived there for a couple years about a decade ago when it was supposedly "rough". And then a couple-3 more years at 27th and Blaisdell where the same was purported to be true. never had a problem. Nowhere near the problems i had with small minded small town fucks in rural areas. I lived in one of those idylic small towns you dream about. A huge military trained straight guy knifed a small and unthreatening gay guy in the face and chest multiple times. A "jury of his peers" gave him 3 years at the murder trial.

This isn't about racism you dorks!
It's about my desire to express how I feel more at solitude without the tensions of the city and that Wisconsin fucking kicks ass because at has a lot of places to escape to. It's another state, feels like I'm on vacation. It was a comment on "Cheeshead Land" which could be taken offensively just for the title. But it seems most people got the point this guys trying to make.

Personally I think all people are racist to a degree. Looking at our history, its a part of evolution. I'm the type of person that feels bad when I step on an ant because I feel that no matter how insignificant something may be it has just as much a right to life as I do. Now if I place that high of regards for a fucking insect how am I going to condemn a fellow human being?

I hang where I feel comfortable. I don't purposly walk through ghettos because I have a nieve sense that my utopian ideals will just shine through the fucking darkness and people will see the light. Yes I do speak from experience I just didn't want to go into storytelling for the benefit of a freshman debate on racism.

And you know what, since you ruffled my feathers a little, let me finish a story.

Me and my girlfriend were looking for a place to cash my paycheck, and my girlfriend says "oh let's go here". I said ok, but I don't really like this neighborhood. She retorts "Why, cuz they are black?" I said "No". She says "Yeah right". She waited in the car. While in the parking lot a car parks next to mine and one person after a another walks up to this car and purchases crack. Meanwhile the dealer keeps eyeing her and finally asks if she needed anything. She says "No" and walks inside to find me. She didn't feel comfortable. Right from the get go all the "brothas" inside started talking about her in sexist tones, sizing her up as a stupid white bitch, whistling at her, staring at her ass and being very obvious about it, and the dealers were on it, ready for their new "ho". I didn't know how to react. I knew that if I stood up for her honor I could very possibly be beat down. After being subjected to such degradation she seemed to understand that although you may not be a supporter of racist causes you don't just blindly assume that people are going to give two fucks about you and the same applys for rural people. By the way, I understand that none if this has to do with race, it has to do with poverty. I know because I come from poverty.

Ha! I never mentioned anything about a idyllic small town that I dream about. I never said anything to that effect. Let me clarify. I like being in the middle of nowhere (I'm talking the deep woods) because I get a feeling of serenity and get in touch with spirituality. I don't like ignorant rednecks either. Have you ever seen "Deliverance" Now your comments about small town folk could also be seen as a "generalization" and we could start an equally juvinile racism arguement on your comments. But I seem to understand what you are saying. I just wish you fuckers would understand me and quit trying to coax me into arguements.

And one more thing!

I was talking about bad neighborhoods, in which some of my friends live and which I frequent. You assuming I'm a racist because I mention decrepit urban conditions only goes to show that maybe you are the one doing the generalizing. I could've been talking about white wannabe gangsta thugs, or even those despicable hotheaded little greasy Italian dago wops.

well, after deleting alot (you talk alot joe), I think you have made some valid points.
The "people are racist to a degree", I think is more of a thing of everyone being ethnocentric to a degree. Kind of the same, but not quite. We are all more comfortable with what is familiar.

Joe, how do you write so much with a shovel in your hand? And I don't really think Nunsoup said anything wrong, just kinda caught you in a double standard. Your original premise was fine but then you fouled it up with a bunch of "hoo ha."

I also think Molly Coddle's point says it all perfectly.

Finally, sweeping generalizations are ALWAYS wrong.
