I need help!!!I'm completely overwhelmed with the idea of planning mine and Hooligankat's trip to the big apple in just over a week. There is just too much to do in only 48 hours. This is what I NEED to do: Empire State Building Times Square CBGB'S Chinatown Chelsea Hotel The Epoxies show at Arlene Grocery (Ollie, let me know if you need anything) What I really want is suggestions for cheap-ish shopping, eating, drinking and rocking out in Manhattan and places that I really need to see as a first-time music-geek-tourist in this city. We'll be in town from 4 PM on Saturday to about 3 PM on Monday and staying on Broadway (either at E32nd or E48th). Since we'll be on foot and using public transport, addresses/directions for any places you recommend would be supercool, too.

I am very envious. Here are some suggestions for the rocking out/drinking part of it: Go to The Continental (punk bar) in Greenwich Village and of course, CBGB is right there, too. The record stores in that part of town are very good, so just walk around and you'll see them. In my opinion, no trip to New York is complete without getting a proper buzz on over at Handsome Dick from The Dictator's place, called "Manitoba's" near St. Mark's. The Handsome One is often right there serving drinks and calling Mexican wrestling matches in English with the sound turned down! Have fun and tell Handsome to get his ass up here again soon if you see him.IP: Logged |

Heh... Easy.. start out on Canal Street and get all those cheap Prada knock-offs and stuff... that's sort of the outer crust of Chinatown... Then head Uptown on Broadway.. that'll bring you to Chelsea--which is in the 20's, I believe.. then keep scooting North until you hit Times Square (be sure it's nighttime, it's much cooler at night). Empire State Building is.. uhm.. in the 40's??50's?? Help me out here, people...As far as eating, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting really good cheap bistros. I think the key thing is to just be cool and not rush around like a nut to see everything.. none of the stuff you mentioned is all that far apart, and it's all on the subway lines... NYC is one of the most easily navigated cities there is... BUT.. one thing, the street addresses don't make any sense.. always get the cross street of wherever you are going.. then give that to the cab driver. Oh! One thing about NYC.. wear comfortable shoes!! Have a great time.. I love NY. [This message has been edited by The Artful Dodger (edited 11-13-2002).] IP: Logged |

Dude! We played Arlene Grocery in August. Nice spot. LOTS of cool graffiti art in the surrounding Lower East Side neighborhood.Go to Junior's Deli in Brooklyn for cheesecake that tastes like Christmas! (I didn't believe it either, but it's true.) Not cheap but worth it. Don't forget to get a tattoo and a Metrocard (put a lot of $ on it right away so you don't have to keep stopping and adding more to it - really helpful when the train's coming and you have to dash down the stairs). Battery Park where you catch the ferry (it's not free anymore, though - $10 I think) has people dressed up as the Statue of Liberty and every huckster imaginable. And if it's your first time there you should check out Central Park during the day - it's a beautiful spot in the city. IP: Logged |

Can we get both of these at the nearest subway station? If you mean an ink-in-your-skin tattoo, I'm pretty sure we won't have that much time. You never know, though. Maybe we'll find a 24 hour place after a night of drinking with Owen and the wife-y and all get hearts inked on our bums.... IP: Logged |

I think there are some good ideas there, but I wouldn't spend time monkeying around in Brooklyn if it's your first time there and you are there for such a short period of time, IMHO. There is plenty to do just in the area you will be staying to keep you busy for a couple weeks. But.. if you ever stay longer, the BEST meal I ever had in my life was in Cobble Hill in Brooklyn. A place called (and I'm going to butcher the spelling here, so all you French-speakers prepare to cringe). Le Boulibasse. Another good place to eat is by Lafette & Astor Place in NoHo and is called Riodezzio... if you like red meat. If not, head south a couple blocks to The Times Cafe.. great people watching...IP: Logged |

Here are the locations of some of the places that people have mentioned. Continental is in the East Village, St. Mark's and 3rd; Empire State Building, 5th Ave between 33rd and 34th; Manitoba's, 7th and Ave. B; Chelsea Hotel, 23rd between 7th and 8th.I recommend the Staten Island ferry as mentioned by Gilligan. Shit, where to begin. I think that tinman would recommend St. John the Devine's Cathedral at 112th and Amsterdam as would I. It is magnificent and the world's largest. Just have fun; don't try to do everything and keep a schedule, itinerary, and all that shit. IP: Logged |

You can actually see a lot in 48 hours in NYC. My first time there, we were only there for 24 and so all of those sites you mentioned. I didn't catch if you found a place to stay, but when my friend is out of town there, I always stat at the Chelsea Int'l Hostel. They have private rooms for like $40/night. It's clean, comfortable and right between the 1/9 (7th Ave.) train and A train (8th Ave.) station on 23rd St. A cool walk from there is to go straight east through Chelsea for a few blocks (to like 5th Ave.) and then head south a few blocks to Gramercey Park. Then go back east until you get to the East Village (St. Marks is over there). A cool area of dive bars and good record stores. Then go south past Houston St. (which is the lower east side) and hang out in that area. Always fun things going on. I'll agree with whoever said to stay in Manhattan since you'll only have a short period of time. The other burroghs are definetely cool also, but not enough time.IP: Logged |

Dude, THIS is where we should meet. I've never been. As for the Continental, uh YUCK! CBGB's? That shit is so last year. L7, s q u a r e man. Shit, that crap hole was last year 10 years ago. If you go, enjoy New Jersey's finest dork metal. Manitoba's rules. Oh and Artful Dodger is totally wrong about Brooklyn. Lovely Smith Street, where I live, has become a mecca for great food and cool bars. Williamsburg is totally happening if you don't mind everyone dressing cooler than you. And I know of the joint he speaks for dinner and it is good. As for Junior's, please girlfriend (snap). Also, Battery Park fucking rules. Plus it's right near the WTC site which makes you think `n' shit. In terms of cheap eats, I'll bring a copy of last week's Time Out New York. They did a great feature on this exact subject. Most excellent. One idea is simpy Ray's Pizza on Prince and Sullivan cuz it's cheap and fun to watch the Eurotrash walk by. Why do the Germans always have such tight, icky jeans on? IP: Logged |

Everything on MY list will be done during the day (except the Epoxies) so that I can say I've SEEN the places. One drink in the daylight at CB's, I promise. Sorry, Owen, but there's no way in hell I'm spending time INSIDE the Chelsea Hotel...I have a huge fear of steppin' on dirty needles. I'm thinking that loitering around it at night waiting for you and the Mrs. isn't a very safe idea, either. Thanks for the mini-walking tour listings...that's a great idea. Any more food or drinking recommendations that are in Manhattan? Did ANY of you shop when you were there? Ollie - One XXL T-shirt and (if possible) one demo tape, coming right up. Do you have any of their stuff on disc at the moment? I'd sure like a copy of it to "practice" on before buying my own.... IP: Logged |

Well, again, Canal St. is pretty cool--be prepared to haggle a little bit. You can get designer knock-offs and stuff there. Frequently there are little street fairs and bazaars and stuff on the weekends just about anywhere. those are fun and good places to shop. If Daffy's is still there, that is a pretty cool place to shop, too. It's like you died and went to Discount Heaven. As far as food goes, everybody is going to have an opinion.. I have my favorite places too (Riodezzio, The Times, Acme Garage, The Hi-Life, La Boulibasse).. but I think rather than running all over town looking for a place somebody else likes, just pick a place that you like--almost all of them post their menus by their front door. There are so many places to eat that everybody here, combined, has probably eaten at about 1% of them all. Hell, you could spend a month just checking out the places to eat in SoHo alone. I'd go to places that serve stuff you can't get here.. decent French food or whatever. Oh.. and NYC is a lot safer than people think. I've found you have to be more careful of sticky fingers or scams than getting outright mugged, as even late at night the streets are pretty busy. I think you just have to use common sense when you walk around at night. You guys are going to have so much fun! IP: Logged |

CBGB really does blow, but you can't argue with historical cachet/making a pilgrimage. As far as bars go, I'm a big fan of Drinkland (crazy decor, including a futuristic "white room" you've gotta see to believe; Lower East Side; 10th between Avenue A and Avenue B) and Gonzalez y Gonzalez (awesome margaritas; giant sombrero outside; right off the Broadway-Lafayette subway stop). You don't have to go all the way to Brooklyn to eat Junior's cheesecake--there's an outlet in the Grand Central food court--but the Brooklyn location is really worth seeing. Another great deli is Katz's (see Dara Moskowitz's column last week in City Pages; she's not kidding about the pastrami). It's close to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which I can't recommend highly enough. Up until last Thursday, my sis lived on the Upper West Side, so a lot of the way I see the city comes from that perspective--if you can make it up to 89th and Amsterdam, there's awesome Cuban Chinese food at a place called La Caridad. And I dig the cheap sushi and all the other asian cuisines under the sun available at Empire Szechuan (96th and Broadway)--the Creaky Chicken there is great, as is the Empire State Roll. There's also a White Castle by the Empire State Building, if, like me, you go for that kind of thing. FAO Schwartz (58th and 5th, I believe) is worth a visit, and there's a Sanrio shop, and a really cool three-story comic book store, right off Times Square. One more thing to watch out for: Battery Park has the filthiest public bathrooms I've ever seen, so go before you go, if you know what I'm saying. IP: Logged |

man oh man, how you going to pack all this in 48 hours? i suggest right away getting a map. i got a great one called "streetwise manhattan" and i use it regularly every trip. you can get 'em at the corner newsstand. i'd go see some things that might not be there next time like the big hole in the ground, little italy and cbgb's. the staten island ferry is a must, but will eat up a big chunk of time. the cathedral church of st. john the devine may not be everyones cup of tea, but walking into it is pretty amazing and it's filled with interesting art. it's an easy subway ride as well. for fun take a cab back downtown and promise him a ten spot to "step-on-it" (as if it's not terrifying enough normally) new york is "safer" than ten years ago, but my last trip saw me dodging badguys twice. be careful out there and have a blast. i'm envious.

brooklyn is the new manhattan. dea, these are all very doable. if at all possible try and do the empire state building on a weekday. from there, just bust over to times square. you can easily hoof it. that should take up a few hours tops. make sure to pop in to tad's steaks and tell them i said what's up. get on the 7th ave line (1,2,3,9) and get off at 23rd. i think the chelsea is between 7th aand 8th on 23rd. hop on the A,C,E down to canal, rock china town, and then walk back up to the LES. arlene's is on stanton and orchard, right? cb's is on bleeker and bowery. same hood (pretty much). you could do all this in a day. now you've got a day to hit the bridges, brooklyn, etc. IP: Logged |
