Thanks for the pics MplsRay! Looks like something i should go to if i get the chance.I will guess it's called "Subzero" coz it takes place in the Soap Factory at the end of Feb.? That place isn't well heated to the best of my recollection. IP: Logged |

I suppose i should chime in on this, seeing as a picture of me passed out and my now deceased dog has been thrown into the mix...I've been involved with subZERO every year on a performance level, as well setting up the afterparties. Here's some fond memories... Rat Bastard (of To Live & Shave in LA/Laundryroom Squelchers) coming to stay at my house when i was just out of highschool and one of my roommates trying to sexually accost another roommate in front of him. calling the cops on him. Driving to subZERO in the morning with a tapped keg in the backseat, me Rat and my cousin drinking the whole way. Playing the LRS set, completely destroying my guitar, getting dragged around the floor, engaging the entire audience in a snowball fight mid-set, throwing an entire row of folding chairs at the audience. OFF THE HOOK. After party at my house going insane with 4 16 year old girl fights and tons of cocaine use and strippers everywhere and these noise nerds not knowing what to do. First time I met No Doctors as well. Next year, play with New Port and LRS. Show up drunk and been doing meth, hanging with girls from squelchers who are all addicts, getting severely drunk where that picture was taken, blacking out at show, driving home to Northeast MPLS with Black Stool, unloading half the equipment into his house both of us passing immediately out. waking up 4 hours later, with dog long gone, car door sitting wide open with all of our amps and guitars still inside. no explanation. Next year. supposed to play solo. Get really REALLY loaded by 11 am and pass out, missing my set. I heard that John Vance, the man who did subZERO every year, no loner works with NNE, so i figured the deal was over. i will ask. IT's quite an experience, unfriendly conditions, unfriendly music. A good excuse to abuse the audience. here are some links for subZERO's of the past... http://www.carbonrecords.com/photos/pengo_sub_zero_01_12_02/index1.html http://freenoise.org/subzero/index.html IP: Logged |

Ah yes. The snowball/folding chair fight. Good times. The drugs and strippers, well, I just stayed away from that, but yes, the noise geeks certainly did not know what to do.IP: Logged |

Somehow I've managed to attend two of these things. It was actually kinda fun. The one last year I showed really late (after working a 14 hour day) right as my friend Andy "Panicsville" Ortman was about to begin his performance. There were approximately 3 people left at that time. It was about 12 degrees and no heat. It was around 10:00 PM. He donned his costume and he and his assitant / girlfriend sort of walked around in weird costumes and turned on some electronics that made funny noises for about 4 minutes. Drove from Chicago to do this. After the show we went back to my place and everyone went to sleep. In the morning we all went to Elsie's for breakfast and they drove the 7+ hours back to Chicago. In the words of the famous critic Leonard Pinth Garnell: "exquisitely terrible...just terribly awfully wonderful."I'd go again. IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure of this, i think the name actually originated with a movie the dudes in Flybussen were either doing or being a part of, and the name transferred over to the fest cause they wanted to film in the soap factory. i think it may have been a coincidence that it was the first show of the soap factory's season, but then all made sense and we kept on doing it. but i was really drunk for all this conversation, so i can't remember much...IP: Logged |

I can't remember Flybussen's role in the naming of the event. There is probably some Super8 footage somewhere. I know I played some lame guitar stuff, but when I finished, everyone clapped excitedly. My tuba player was out in the snow wearing nothing but boxers (typical). One of my favorite gigs there (and therefore totally unrecorded) was some kind of chili buffet with many many people there. Flybussen did two sets totaling something like 2 hours. I couldn't believe that people's ears weren't tired. We normally did 20-30 minute sets. And there was also some gig where my bandmate smashed bottles over his pump organ, pushed it over, and poured beer on it. JV was not happy about that mess. Someone got to take the pump organ home for free. Who was that? lucky bastard. I wanted it. IP: Logged |

Yes as it stands subZERO right now is not happening at the Soap Factory. We (me and John) are looking for a way to make it work. If you've got a space that is freezing as fuck and can have bands play, get in touch.IP: Logged |
