I went there last week, not bad, a little to cluttered. I was expecting more of a lounge atmosphere. What I got was hipster apartment circa 98.IP: Logged |

Two doors from the pasta bar. It used to be Annie's. It's Pretty and all. No waiters, counter service bar.. Not a bad idea really.IP: Logged |

I'm doing booking for the Kitty Cat Klub (bar with a cool name? no thank you.) downstairs, the Cavern. We don't really have all our shit together yet; the stage and PA aren't installed yet, etc. So any and all suggestions are completely welcome, including what bands you want to see there. I have my own ideas about who I want to book, but I don't know everything. 18+ is the word. We'll have bottled beer downstairs next to the stage, and you can get liquah upstairs and bring it down. This means we have to do the wristband thing and card alot, but for 18+, I think it's a small inconvenience. Right now, we only do Saturday night rock shows, but maybe we'll have weekdays after a little while. The first show should be December 28th. If you want to set up a show or if you want to yell at me (please feel free), email thecavernbooking@yahoo.com Love and Bombs, Ben Hecker IP: Logged |

No offence to Ben at all, but WHY THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE OPENING MORE FUCKING ROOMS IN THIS FUCKING CITY??????The LAST thing the TC needs is another fucking venue. There are pleanty of unused and under-utilised rooms just sitting there. We DON'T need another venue, we need people who know how to book the ones that are already there. IP: Logged |

Very true, however, if I were to put my hat in the game I'd want to book a Dinkytown space. The U is a totally underutilized resource for bringing in new heads, though initially out of curiosity, eventually adding to whatever agenda you might have. Not to mention many of the rooms out here are 21+ and then the most important piece, college girls. Can I get an amen?IP: Logged |

Ben- What kind of PA do they have there? What's the capacity? How do bands get paid (door $$$ or from the bar)? Does the stage sound good? Thanks. IP: Logged |

Fine question! Everything's still in the process of being set up. The stage is not built yet, but I have assurances that it will be ready within the next two weeks at most. We have the PA, but it's not installed, so I haven't been able to hear it. Our sound man is quite capable, so I think it will all sound good. There are concrete, mostly parallel walls that need to be tweaked a little. Please, please, please stop in and take a look at the space and let me know what you think about it. Money will be paid out of the door after the security people get theirs. I'm pushing hard for lots of free drinks, too. Competitive. These are all the questions at the top of my list too, so I'll keep you posted. Ben IP: Logged |

Why would there be "security people"? Does shit get rowdy down there? So, when many shows might only pull in, say, $200 at the door, one security guy is going to get about as much as a band might make? I don't mean to break your balls here, but this is a pet peeve of mine. In my opinion, the door money should go to the bands in a bar situation. All of it. When you think of the money generated by that bar vs. the tiny amount at the door, it's laughable sometimes how much a band takes home after everybody working the show grabs their chunk of cash before the band. You know what I mean, I'm sure! Option 2: no cover and pay the bands well from the bar money a la Maggie McPherson at The old version of the Uptown. That always blew us away every time we played Minneapolis. It was so perfect.IP: Logged |

The paying security out of the door got my attention. Is this a flat fee, a percentage, or what? I was tempted to outright dismiss the idea, but I'll let you fill us in on the details before I make a decision. However, it doesn't sound good.IP: Logged |

Right, right. Yeah, I agree about the door money thing and that's what I'm pushing for from the boss-man as the TC norm. Security stuff is going to be pretty important for legality at an 18+ drinking venue, though. The reason it looks like this right now is because of the way things are set up at the Pasta Bar Hip Hop Night. Hip hop expectations are different from rock expectations, I know, and this is also one of my main suggestions to the boss-man. If this is going to be a good place to play, bands will have to be happy with what they're getting, obviously, and I intend to make it that way. Alot of the money stuff is just going to have to be unofficial for awhile, mainly because the boss-man hasn't ever been involved with rock shows before, so doesn't really know what to expect from them. I will say on his behalf, that he's expressed a sincere interest in being a welcoming force for underground music. Of course the bottom line matters, as it does at all bars, but I think it'll work out. Plus, there are some popular and credible venues here which employ, um, dubious accounting when paying bands. No naming names. That won't happen here, and every effort will be made to make it both well-paying and rock. Again, thank you for the input. Very helpful. Ben P.S. It would also be very helpful to get specifics regarding what everyone thinks is the normal policy at specific bars around town. I know about the places I play, but the more concrete info I have, the better I can make my case to the people who have the final call. IP: Logged |

Well, an update and response:J.B. could be two people, both of whom I enjoy. Kafka Dreams is on the list, yeah. Get yer band ready ok. PA and stage still in development stages mmm hmm. Initial PA looks to be a little bit off what I would hope for, so all of us involved are making this known to the bossman. It will end up being good, I swear. I do not know final dates for the opening, but I'll let you know. Being compared to a hip-hop night like tonight at the Pasta Bar is going to be rough. Something like 1,000 people paid a cover!? Hip-hop is more popular than rock for some reason; maybe because there's only a few hip-hop venues and a billion rock bars. Fuck it. Rock still wins. Rock is like the Democratic party. Hip hop is like Republicans. Get the message straight. Ben IP: Logged |

My biggest problem with the place is the owner. John Remarcik (hard name to spell). Also the owner of Annie's Parlor, The Aster Cafe, Monte Carlo (again with the spelling), and Cafe Havana. The guy is a jerk. Makes his employees cry (but not me). He fired the manager at the Aster (where I worked) for very questionable reasons once the place started making money. My manager got a percentage of the profits, hence the questionable reasons he was fired. The owner, John, is filthy rich. Why not support some other venue? So what if it is eye candy and has a cool name? I realize that the employees of the place are not the bad people in this situation and if any offense is taken by them, my apologies. If my favorite band is playing there, I'm likely to go. I just hate seeing money go to this guy. In fact I would tip the bartender really well if my drinks were free.IP: Logged |
