Is done. no more shows. thank you very much to all you bands who could play anywhere you wanted in this town and fucked it all up for everyone who couldn't. I have shows for Wolf eyes, young people, caroliner rainbow that i cannot book anywhere else now because of you. Contrary to popular belief, i'm not a weiner and didn't freak out about these shows, and because i didn't it;s all over now. legal suits are pending, ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. YES YOUR STUPID FUCKING BAND THAT PLAYED AT THE CHURCH. This doesn't include tulip sweet and ANYTHING that happened before oct 01. The rest of you, yes i do mean you. Go see your shows at babylon, thats about the only place you are going see shit that is good for the right price. 7th street and big v's are doing it but losing money on it. this was the place that fucked up bands could make money and the stupid rock bands in this town ruined it all. Again, thanks for sucking ass as a band and ruining a good thing. please keep playing. IP: Logged |

Why not be a little more specific? What do you have to lose now? Is there someone that frequents this board that you are directing this to? Me? I did a show there on Oct. 25 that went off without a hitch, and it was after Oct. 1 and I am not Tulip Sweet so.... Everyone was happy and no one punched anyone. Why not put the blame on Susan? It's her space.I hate saying this- but this was inevitable. And yes, I am sad that shows can't happen there-- "fucked up" music or not fucked up music.

I'd have to agree - bummer news, but at the same time, Sonitus, you should be directing your anger to the person in private. If you MUST make vague references to why the Church is no longer doing shows in public forum, you might as well go all out so everyone understands the reason behind it.My unsolicited $0.02. no offense msg, but a lot of the "fucked up" music shows i've seen recently there have been the most rowdy ones. (friday night for example) if people would have treated this more like a conventional venue, it could have stayed around longer. 5 band shows starting at 11PM, shows starting after the bars close, you yourself anatagonizing people in the audience when your "performing" i think are just much to blame for this as a couple of rock bands playing there. so i think if your going to point the finger at anyone maybe you should point it at yourself as well. i mean you could have came on here and posted about the situation at hand just to let people know but instead you come on here crying like people here ruined your little club. i set up one show there after 10/1 as well and it was over by 1PM and no one got punched and hardly anyone even got rowdy. but it is a shame. i liked going there when there were interesting bands(wolf eyes, animal collective, pink + brown, neon hunk, etc.) but a lot of those shows were marathon like in length where it seemed people (the local "acts" namely)borrowed equipment just to get on stage to make asses of themselves. i didn't find a lot of that shit good or arty or even standable in most cases. Dude it's obvious why. Susan isn't on this board so there is no point in me saying anything 'to' her, and i'd like to not wash that laundry here, but the woman can't say no, and too many people wanted to play there, and even if shows went without a hitch, they continuosly wore down the neighbor. Doing shows how i did it (please note, when it was tulip sweet's space it was still utlized in the same manner i was doing it, infrequent shows, just on frid/sat though i know there were other shows.) Yes my 'anger' is directed at anyone else who did shows, and i'm not trying to be a penis, exactly, cause right, whom am i and why should i get control over the space. well i did have it, and no one went there for shows anymore until i started doing stuff, and when it became obvious susan wasn't going to control shows, i essentially stopped doing them to try and take some pressure off. did that work? no, more people started asking to do shows. The reason I wanted to run things is i could do the shows infrequently, whenever an act that i liked came through that couldn't play elsewhere easily. So now i have shows by bands i can't do anywhere else with ease that makes sense. Plain and simple, it was not just susan's fault for not saying no, it's everyone who kept asking, you didn't NEED to play there, sure it was fun, however there was more at stake than your one or 4 bands. sorry if i am a dick, but that's the way it is. It definately could of been worked on in a way where people 'could' play, but 3 shows a week minimum wore it's toll on the neighbors, who were cool enought o never call the cops. Anyway, it's done for the foreseeable future, don't ask for a show no more. IP: Logged |

Whatever dude, your a moron. And i'm a crybaby. if you had any respect for what i do, and the shows that i did (all the ones you list i put on) instead of being a penis-wrinkle about it, you would of helped. God that's great your show went over without a hitch. What an idiot i must be for having shows that went long and i antagnozied the audience. believe it or not, plenty of people liked it, or they wouldn't have stayed there all night. Friday's show, that's a funny one, cause i had the date and susan booked an entire show over it. IP: Logged |

Cause it's fun and hip? Just don't make sense to me when it's the only option for these other bands who are now screwed? Hey, who wants to put up $500 of their own money to see Wolf Eyes? or Caroliner? speak up! And find a venue while you're at it. IP: Logged |

Can I ask more questions? Good. So, after this horrible double-booking there was some sort of arguement w/ Susan? Did the cops come? Did Susan say something to the effect of "That's it! No more shows ever!". I guess it was cop thing, huh? Someone is suing Susan and she still had a show? Is it something personal between you and Susan? IP: Logged |

i don't want to get into a lame webboard war with you. i am fully aware that you set up the aforementioned shows at the church. but you posted your shows here and fliers were put up over town for certain shows. so did you not actually want anyone to come to these? did you expect when people who were in other bands saw how cool the place was that they wouldn't want to play there? so were you talking to me personally since i set up a show there after 10/1 or what? if you were, maybe it's not so easy for the band i play in or nick's to get a good show at big v's or elsewhere either? if not then thank you for bringing interesting music to the city. but no thank you for almost every horrible local ear splitting noise group that played (there were exceptions) . maybe those people who don't give a fuck about their music, who just want to get fucked up and play with pedals on loud amps shouldn't have a place to play. i agree that it sucks that wolf eyes and other noise acts who are actually doing something worthwhile won't have a good venue to play but i always hated, and i know i'm not alone, how there was always some local groups playing those shows that thought anyone besides their friends wanted to watch them jump around and make there tasteless noise. the shows could have had less bands, could have gotten started at a better time and ended before 3AM, factors i'm sure which help lead to the this. you set the precedent and it sucks things got beyond your control. i don't want to fight with you. but if your going to say shit on a public forum, don't expect everyone here to just say "sorry i set up a show there ever" and beg for your forgiveness. you brought cool stuff to this city, but this post and some of the asshole shit you pull is pretty stupid. Sonitus, from experience I have learned that the majority of this board does not care about the underground type shit whatsoever. 99 percent of the posters on this board have no clue what the church is/was all about. And their ignorance breeds apathetic attitudes. No sense arguing it here, it will only frustrate you. Believe me, I am on your side on this one. But instead of dealing with the real problem, losing shows at the church, you will more likely be critisized for calling people morons and posting emotional, angry rants. Now if some hipster yuppie bar that makes money off of punk bands once or twice a week, and reinvests that money in the 4-6 non-punk nights is closing, then maybe you will have more support on this message board.IP: Logged |

yeah, unfortunately your taste differs from plenty of people, and we are getting into a fight here. i mean, ok mr subjective, your bands suck. pure and simple, just stupid. But you play around town, how does that happen? The point is, there really isn't ANY good bands in this town. So when trying to find an opener, i just picked fucked up stuff cause they aren't playing anywhere. And i'd VERY much like you to tell me who is stupid and pointless that you didn't like. fuck it dude, you shouldn't of come if it was so 'tough' on you and if i'm such an asshole, why did you? but you liked it. plenty of people liked plenty of the other acts, plenty liked and disliked the main acts, whatever i'm not doing it so i can gather reviews and tailor the music. i'm doing stuff i like. people came. i very much understand why people want to play there and i'm being selfish but whatever i don't give a fuck. babylon exists cause they have quality control. they don't let any shmo come and play. i unfortunately had no control over that unless it was my show, and i can't tell you how many times i got double booked, or had the show cancelled 5 minutes before we all left to go there. So if you want to get all subjective and piss and moan about bands, your's sucks, whatever. IP: Logged |

For the record- the only reason I set up a Sicbay show at the church was because House Of Knives said we couldn't do the show there less than a fucking week before the show was scheduled and I had two touring bands with no show on a Friday night. I was kind of surprised and relieved when Susan said 'yes' to the show. I figured it would be sort of little exception to the usual stuff at the church- we do our show and be on our way, probably never come back. A one-off. I truly hope I didn't have anything to do with changing the feel of this "venue". It was never my/Sicbay's intent.IP: Logged |

hey now buddy, i met you through an email that YOU sent to ME about wanting to put out a RICK release and get us some shows. well you flaked on the cdr, you collected money at the seawhores show with us for my out of town bandmates and stiffed them, then stiffed us again at the pink + brown show, then made the lovelife show a pain in the ass and now this. so what was the point of your post? it's was obviously to start something, i don't know what. but i'm through posting about this though, let's get together for a beer and discuss this if you still have a problem. and if you still have a problem after the beer, we can have a knife fight in the fucking parking lot. i'm game. whatcha doing tonite?

let's get something REAL clear. I stiffed NO ONE. I think you'll remember i let you play at my fucking house when the house of knives flaked on the show, THAT DAY. I had to leave to run errands and when i get back the basement is full of people. No one collected money, your fault bro. Next, the pink + brown show, you were welcome to do the door, however, no one would and like 4 different people did it and at the end of the night, there was 150$. you aren't on tour, it goes to the touring band i explained that. Rick in my basement was fun, it was agonizing at Sursumcorda. i changed my mind, who cares? Tonight i have a date, thursday we go to grumpy's NE. I am starting my own venue in NE, watch for it. we already have a place. no shit. i don't mean to be rude to you dude, but this sucks pretty big time. i book wolf eyes and caroliner, and i am dealing with the fact that in good faith i might have to have them skip mpls, which blows, and i'm pissed. i don't mean to insult you, but that is the reason the church has gone under. the lady was cool with everything, the shows, the lateness, whatever. it got to be the amount that drove her nuts. these were things susan yelled at me about, and then went and did herself. my monkey does all my knife fighting for me. people were collecting money in your basement. where did it go? several of my friends who came to the show paid $5. the rick guys didn't get a cent of it for gas money. there were no other touring bands.i don't give two shits about you not putting out a CDR for us. i know you got more than $150 at the pink + brown show, whatever. you about gave us money and then you took it back. you asked us to play and those guys drove 6 hours to for that show and that awful sursumcoda show. some paying show attendants were actually there to see us, at least at the church show. they deserved some compensation. they got $10 from the sursumcorda show where we had to play twice in one night to virtually no one. i understand that your upset about not being able to have shows at the church but that doesn't give you license to be an asshole. all those other things bothered me but never enough to say anything until now. so whatever, i don't care if you like anything i'm apart of, but i'm not going to apologize for setting up a show and i still think it's immature you come here to point your finger randomly at anyone who set up a show after 10/1. but whatever, grumpy's tomorrow night then? your monkey doesn't stand a chance, then i'm coming for you. Another point and then I'm shutting up-- when I saw that some of the shows made the City Pages A-List earlier this year, I thought to myself "that's it, it's over". It's such a dilemma with promoting the "underground" stuff, the "outing" creates curiousity and, *gasp*, the Public Eye! Do you really want to invite the entire city to a Wolf Eyes show?IP: Logged |

Why does Wolf Eyes or Caroliner need $500 for a show? For drugs? Wicketran rarely made more than $50 a show on tour. Once in awhile we'd make $100. Our highest paying road show ever was $150, and that was at a college playing with the Flying Luttenbachers and Milemarker. We seemed to do it ok, usually came home with a little extra even while sleeping in hotels/motels on nights we couldn't find a place to crash. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I get the impression that I know where this is going. Matt, I can see your point about bands that didn't "have" to play there, but at the same time, you or anyone else could've refused these bands the venue if you really held it so close and dear. Wicketran played there with Pink & Brown, and I'm grateful that you gave us the opportunity, moreso now that they are no longer - I'm glad I had a chance to do a show with them while they're around. We could've probably played "anywhere", but most bands just want to have more places to play, and I don't see why you can't understand that.

Caroliner is an 9 piece band from San Fran, do the math. Wolf Eyes deserves it and has about 8 cagillion devices to set up and move around which takes hours upon hours. As for not 'understanding' i understand fine, bands wanna play more places blah blah blah. However, this space was different. Local bands did not NEED to play there, strange/difficult out of town bands did. And i CERTAINLY fucking tried my ass off to make sure this was the case, however, susan is in charge of everything and has the final word, and she couldn't say no to the 15 requests she got a week for people wanting to play there. it's fucking HOUSE people, meaning the shows are illegal, and the idea was to build up a following of people who come for these types of shows, not to see x bad rock band play there one week before they play the turf club. i don't understand people being selfish and not thinking about what the fuck is up with these musics, cause it was hard enough to get 100 of you to listen, I mean i could do a show for Total Shutdown or Numbers or whatever at Big V's and 7th Street and none of you bastards would show up. Here they would. Now it's done. How can you not understand what i was trying to there? I DEFINATELY understand where the main blame lies. However that person isn't here, and a bunch of you were just as guilty and i'm pissed, so i'm laying in. Local acts NEVER got paid, sometimes a few bucks, but the idea was to GET THESE BANDS TO COME HERE. Paying them $50 is stupid. I was able to give bands like 25 Suaves and Wolf Eyes, etc. over $200, and that's why they come back. The shows were off the hook great, but the money is what made them tell their friends and their friends to want to play here. I have a show i'm doing for Young People/Liars that was specifically asked to be at the Church. They don't want to do the Entry (as many of these bands do not). So what do i tell them now? They love the people they've met here and want to come badly, but i'm not about to put me or my city or wanting to see them over them being able to have a good show and get paid. Plain and simple, people abused the magic of the space, wanting to see themselves on the stage instead of allowing a place to flourish that catered to weirder/more difficult bands. How often did you see me play there?? In like 25+ some shows i did there, i must of played about 3 times. I never really got up and told everyone 'hey i'm the one who did this,' i am not interested in that shit, just getting stuff done. in hindsight i should have. In hindsight i should of never put up with the shit i did at that space, and i won't even get into that, but i put up with a TON of fucking crap, NEVER took money from ONE single show there, stayed the next day to clean the whole thing up, promoted did everything myself, not ONE person helped EVER. it fucking stank, but it was worth it to see these bands. Where do they play now? No one fucking gave 2 shits when it was happening and i doubt anyone will now. Whine Whine Whine, yep that's me, i just would like to see a quality show once a month and not have stupid bands rain on the parade. I'm not saying everyone that played was stupid or really trying to be a dick, but shit man, you (general) definately could of played everywhere else but here. IP: Logged |

i agree that since the place was illegal that local shows shouldn't have been happening there at all. was that happening a lot in the last few months or something? i wasn't aware that was the case. i thought the only shows that were happening were national act shows and that you were pissed about the national ROCK acts and the local ROCK bands who set them up there. but yeah having a bunch of local shows there, if thats what was going on, was a bad idea. i had a show booked there on january 18th with 4 omaha groups and i promised them plenty of gas money. now i don't know where i'm going to have it and i doubt they are going to get much money now either. why don't you just say who your so pissed at instead of directing your anger at people who have done nothing to you? or don't say anything at all. well, national acts is a pretty big word for what was going on. There were PLENTY of local only shows. I myself would have never done a local show there. I can't even think of who would be on the bill... it's easy, even better to do that stuff at Big V;s. Frankly to hear you pissed about the 'noise' acts is one of the responses we hope for, and enjoy. Indiffence is the worst. Hating is just below Loving it, and sometimes above, and the fact you hated something that was 'pointless noise' is great for me. Have you ever listened to any Freedom From tape releases? No.That's another thing, i have friends who release weird shit in this town too, and we collectively don't sell any of it locally. I got my first local order in 2 FUCKIN YEARs last week. 2 years people. I know my music isn't THAT bad and the prices are pretty fucking cheap. When i can sell 500 of one release to Japan, Belgium, France, California and Vermont in one shipment and none here, my mind is blown. So forcing ya'll to see some of this stuff (and you are right some of it wasn't good, but i'd rather give a bad noise band a chance over a bad or even sorta acceptable rock band, you can see that anywhere, here you know you'd see something different, on whatever level level you know you've been accustomed to this 'different' stuff (if you saw it in 1942 already like Zom) and i could hardly know what half of them were gonna do before it). So anyway, i do apologize for harsh words, i'm just upset and at a loss what to do for the moment. And again, the $500 thing is what i'm asking every city to get, Caroliner essentially loses money if they make below this, and when you see them, you'll know why. Just an incredible and insanely orignal live show that's so completely overwhelming on every single sense. Wolf Eyes are incredible too and touring for them is incredibly costly and time consuming and tough. Their equipment is all one of a kind. All rewired shit and tons of strange boxes, this isn't effects pedal wanking, and i'll thank you very much that i try everything to have NOTHING to do with pedal nerds and knob twiddlers (but in the case of the band Black Dice, total killer knob twiddlin man...) anyway, their set up is intense, the last church show they headlined we had to use 3 pa's to adequately capture their sound. And boy did it work and boy did it take FOREVER. Plenty of people (100+ each time) show up for their show, why shouldn't they get paid well? I do deeply though disagree with you nate about the payments. I mean, the double booking deal that i was whining about before? i HAD that date booked myself for Love Life and Susan did the exact same thing with you that she did with this very last show. You wrote me beforehand which was cool, but i just didn't want to deal with it and her and just wanted LL on the bill and my part was done. I did nothing else to fuck with that. One thing you should always know, you should hate Ashcroft. As much as our goal is to be a totally shitty spazz and to have people hate us, we really actually want them to dislike us as people. And then hopefully they'll get the point, your government is acting like this towards you every day. Our message is political and very, very dorky and overdone. But dude, Rick definately got money, it was just like $13, that's all that was in the hat at the end of the night. I don't snake payments froma touring band ever. I don't do it to anyone. I gave Pink & Brown all the cash and said you could have the majority of the funds from the show the next night at Sursumcorda, and all local bill i put together and NO one showed. NO ONE. i couldn't of planned that, yeah fuck you so you don't get any cash cause this is gonna bomb. Didn't it get an A List or they adverted it huge or something. But it was those smoking nights or nonsmoking no drinking fucking a nights. I didn't plan that, and i'm sorry, but i'm doing EVERYTHING i can. Pink & Brown HAD a $200 guarantee and we didNOT get that and i paid out of my own pocket, didn't play, set the entire thing up, did everything else, what did you do? Again, i'm sorry the payment was fucked, but sometimes that shit is out of my control. and not often. but i don't like being characterized as someone who 'screws' bands over when i guarantee the consensus is with a majority that i do a pretty damn good job. I didn't review any of this and i'm sure i sound just as dumb as i usually do, but my two cents and sincere apology for being 100% asshole. I'll turn it down to %75. if you do ever get the chance, http://freedom-from.com we just redesigned it and it still looks bad. IP: Logged |

Thanks dude! That does mean a lot. Hopefully you'll come to the shows when they are at another place. My mailing list has all the shows, and the ones i do are noted. that's at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mplsunderground or you can send a blank email to mplsunderground-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you will be added. it's no discussion list, just a show announcement thing that's pretty invaluable if you want to see/hear anything that's a little out of the way. it's only for around mpls/stp. again, thanks a bunch! Well my foot is halfway in the air. I should get all the info here first, but it seems things might still happen in some very small INVITE only thing at The Church, but not for a bit, but most likely, it will not be the same. People evidently have been fucking up the neighbors house and yard, as well as shit inside the church. Damaging, destroying and stealing. This is a very large problem. People who live there do not want it to go on this way, and thus everything is changing and I can positively tell you that the booking is gonna be pretty impossibly tight, i don't know if i will have anything to do with it, but for the reasons listed here and above, an essential closing of the place was needed. We may see some shows there, but don't be on much.IP: Logged |

Maybe just tell Susan to tell bands that you are the booking guy and let you deal with saying "no" to 8,000 rock bands. It's hard to say no. Being a booking agent means you're gonna be a dick/dickess eventually to some suck-ass band and most people can't handle that. She just wants to be helpful.I still have my Caroliner Rainbow LP with a damn dishrag in the box with it from goddamn 1989 or something. I wanna see that shit. .02
